I bet you didn’t know this about Audi most Americans that I know pronounce it like ADI in German we say Audi and there’s actually a funny story as to where this name came from in 1904 a guy called August toy founded a car company called apong toy on company

But a few years later he left the company and founded a new one but he wasn’t allowed to call it hot again and since that’s not only his last name but also means listen in the imperative form he ended up translating it into Latin and that’s Audi so Audi means listen the

  1. After the war, Audi was re-established in West Germany because the Zwickau location was in Soviet territory, later GDR. Audi initially manufactured replacement parts for older models. Then Mercedes improved them again and got the modern four-stroke petrol engine. VW bought Audi and the engine became the basis for the new VW models.

  2. The Audi location in Zwickau became AWZ. They later manufactured the Trabant. This still had the two-stroke engine of the old models. It wasn't until the 1990s that it got a 40hp VW Polo engine. But only for a short time until the factory was closed.

  3. Ironically, the insurance inspector that came to our farm field in SW Indiana yesterday to look at our burned out combine was driving an Audi Q5. He would've looked right driving a large American pickup, and when the car showed up, I was expecting somene totally different from the guy that exited the vehicle.

  4. Knowing it's a German make of automobile, I always pronounced it as Germans do. I mean, that's just being respectful. But thanks for this background history, Feli! How many people could have guessed?

  5. I would like to add that not all Audi models are manufactured in Ingolstadt. They have a second big facility in Neckarsulm where they produce the models A4, A5_Convertible, A6, A7, A8, R8, e-tron_GT..

Neckarsulm is a small town in Baden-Württemberg some 200km west of Ingolstadt and 80km north of Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg.

  6. Thanks Feli! I always thought it was a contraction of “Auto Union”, when Audi was formed from four car companies, hence the “four rings” logo! 😅

  7. I did know this in fact, Feli, as I worked for Audi for 19 years 😂 As you know too that the four rings comes from the three other companies which merged with Audi – NSU, Wanderer and DKW. Some debate remains, however, as to what the latter stands for – Das Kleine Wunder, or Dampf Kraft Wagen😆
