I bought a shimano CS-HG50-8 for my bike but I’m having an issue installing it. For one I only see 7 sprockets (6 are installed, and 1 is free). And the other issue is this plastic ring. It looks riveted to the back. I’m a bit confused. Can anyone help?

The black ring is a spacer for the second smallest sprocket, which appears to be missing.
You’ll want to return that one. That black bit is supposed to have [a cog atop it](https://dassets.shimano.com/content/dam/global/cg1SHICCycling/final/products/cg2SHICComponent/cg3SHICChain/cg4SHICChain/P-CS-HG50-8_16954_1.jpg/jcr:content/renditions/P-CS-HG50-8_16954_1_750_750.jpeg).
You probably bought a cassette which was returned by another customer to the shop. The 13t sprocket ist missing, either it got lost by the previous customer or by the shop during inspection of the returned item. Here’s how a “out of the box” HG50-8 should look like, notice the white plastic clamp which holds the sprockets and the black lock ring together (for easy installation). It’s missing as well. Return it 👍

If anyone has an idea for a box design to prevent this sort of thing, I’d like to hear it.
