I know I took a 26 inch tire off of it since it’s about rotted, but when I tried to put my Specialized Fatobys on it, which are 26×1.25 inch sized, they were way short, almost like trying to stretch a 24 inch tire onto a 26 inch rim. The tire that come off was a 26×1.3/8 inch size. I got a cheap 26×1.95 inch tire from Wallyworld to do a sanity check, and it too was way too small. I also got a 27 inch tire, which was a bit big, and a 700 cc tire, which was way too big to check to see if the rim was either of those sizes. It is just labeled “Murray” and “Speed” though the back cassette has 5 gears with the crank having 2. Something else that I thought interesting was that the tire I took off (rear) was the only one that showed its size, whereas the sides of the front tire, which looks identical, didn’t seem to have any sort of branding or markings on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was actually a proprietary size that was labeled as a now common one. Is this the case?

  1. Nope, there are just A BUNCH of different 26″ tire sizes.
Your Murray is **not compatible** with any of the popular ones. Yours is 26 1 3/8, that’s a fractional size. It was popular on dept store 3 speeds decades ago.

  2. lostarchitect on

You need the EXACT size on the old tires: 26″ x 1-3/8″. It’s not a proprietary size, just an older one.

There are not a lot of tires available in this size anymore. Panaracer Col de la Vie is probably the best, if you can find it. Michelin World Tour is decent. Kenda makes one if you can’t find anything else.

Keep in mind with tire sizes that there are lots and lots of standards.
