Because the world is wet and messy. If you’re unsplattered then the fenders did their job. The only way to prevent this is not riding near wet surfaces.

It takes a long-ass front fender to protect you and the bottom bracket. I fabricated [this front mudflap](https://i.imgur.com/Df0BNPv.jpg) from light-weight and flexible “kydex” plastic that I bought on line. It extends to within 10 cm / 4″ from the ground to catch the spray from the tire. It keeps the bike and I clean and dry on wet rides.
