Two friends, two gravel bikes, two days in Tennengau, SalzburgerLand. Austrians Marco and Florian have known each other since they were kids. But they have never been on a gravel bike tour together. Until now.
The challenge: One GPS, an unfamiliar route and two days. The adventure starts in the city of Salzburg in Austria, then continues along the Salzach river. Once on the road, it doesn’t take long until the first mountain climbs. The gravel bike is a perfect companion as it allows comfortable riding both on asphalt and loose ground. The tour is challenging. “You can do it,” says Marco to cheer on his childhood friend. The spectacular panoramic views make up for the effort and keep the pair motivated. This and the fact that they will spend the night in a cosy rustic hut.
The next day starts with a breathtaking sunrise. One of these that you can only experience in the mountains and that instantly make you pause. The bike route continues on gravel, forest paths and roads until Marco and Florian arrive back in Salzburg – with lots of memories of their tour and a deeper connection with nature – and each other.

▬ A-Z: Gravel biking for beginners ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
A like Adventure:
Gravel biking is first and foremost a fun activity! Not least because it allows you to explore new terrain – on and off the actual trail. The journey is the goal.
E like Equipment:
Safety first! Apart from the right bike, a well-fitting helmet, tyres, cycling gloves and suitable clothing are essential for gravel biking. And don’t forget to pack plenty of energy boosting snacks (nuts, muesli bars etc.) as well as a first-aid kit into your backpack. Since you will be biking on bumpy terrain, make sure the bottle holder actually keeps your bottle in place. A selection of tools and spare parts comes in handy in case you need to repair your bike on the way.
F like Fitness:
When venturing on a gravel tour, you will notice that things are going uphill pretty much from the start. Choose a route that is suitable for your fitness level and slowly increase. Don’t shy away from more challenging routes. If one stage is too steep, push the bike, take a break, and enjoy the scenery.
R like Route planning:
Apps such as “komoot“ and “Ride with GPS” offer plenty of exciting routes. Their tour details and GPS device will come in handy when gravel biking in Austria.
S like Shoes:
MTB shoes are the perfect footwear, as you will dismount and push the bike every now and then on your gravel tour.
T like Technique:
When biking on stony ground, it is key to use your brakes gently – otherwise you will risk blocking them. The often uneven ground requires more attention than asphalt. Keep an eye out for stones and other obstacles and shift your weight in good time. Stay relaxed and don’t lean into the curves too much.
