For all you all I would love that Oh Oh All right good morning to all visitors in person and online my name is Joshua and I’d like to welcome you on behalf of the worship team and family here at carile United Methodist Church as you may know we have embarked on a journey of Hope over the past two weeks we found
Hope in the Psalms and discovered that hope is almost always born in seasons of disorientation we learned of the continuous cycle of orientation disorientation and reorientation hope Begins by waiting on God with patient expectation we also found Hope in the letters of Paul finding three key things to living in
Hope even when circumstances are difficult fix your eyes on God find a bigger perspective and bless where you are today we look to Jesus and find Hope in him the gospel shows three different ways we find ourselves without hope our actions fear and anxiety and Brokenness
Jesus offers himself as the one who can lead us back to Hope let us bow our heads in prayer Heavenly Father we come to you weary and burdened for some this year has started off strong and we hope that it continues that way for some this year has been
Turbulent and we’re hoping for the reorientation and change there are some who have nothing left but hope I pray for the children in Palestine I pray for the children of Israel Ukraine Taiwan Ethiopia Ecuador and every country where there is currently disorientation where there is currently conflict and where there is need of
Hope we also pray for your healing and I pray that we would remember that hope is not passive it’s not sending an email request to God and just saying it’s out of my hands hope is active hope is not waiting for something to fall upon you hope is looking for the opportunity to
Help lift somebody else up looking for your grace and looking for your blessings so I pray that we would actively seek hope today and every day this year amen amen stand on your feet thank you Joshua I’m coming back to the Stars Where you found me coming back to your heart you’re I surrender take me this is all I can bring if you know what I want you to sing along here goes I’m coming back to the our God is freedom and here we feel your heart your heart be S

Transform others as well we bring all these prayers before you and all of us join in saying amen amen well we give thanks for all those prayers and for all of you being part of a church that prayers and cares for one another today for our give
Moment we have an update about how we as a church finished 2013 or 2023 whoa that was bad it’s good because some of you caught it this side is awake not feeling it over here people 2023 how we finished it Eric Sans is new to our Leadership Council and he’s going
To be sharing an update about how we did financially last year check it out good morning cuc my name is Eric Sans and I come to you this morning as the finance chair for the Leadership Council first I would like to thank everyone for your prayerful gift giving this past year as
A reminder the operating budget for 2023 was approximately $1.3 million in 2023 you sitting at the South Spring Garden campus and you watching online increased your giving by 4.3% over the giving in 2022 this is absolutely incredible this increased giving allowed us to end the year almost even just $500 in the red
Despite increased expenses as prices continued to rise especially in the early part of the year in addition to your traditional giving you have also supported our Capital campaign 3 by already giving over $430,000 to help reduce the amount that we will need to finance this year thank
You finally I’ll leave you with this my star word for this year is Unity I picked it at random that first Sunday in January and wasn’t sure where this would take me but as I had prepared for this short message I stumbled across this in Philippians chapter 2 therefore if you
Have any encouragement from being united with Christ if any comfort from his love if any common sharing in the spirit if any tenderness and compassion then make my joy complete by being like-minded having the same love being one in spirit and of one mind do nothing out of
Selfish ambition or vain conceit rather in humility value others above yourselves I believe you all have demonstrated the truth In this passage thank you and May the peace of Christ be with you well we give thanks for all your giving and as Eric said it takes
The unity of our church to come together and make that happen so whether you give in person here at the boxes as you come in or leave worship whether you give online you text to give or you use an envelope and mail it in or drop it off
All of that comes together to make giving and Ministry happen here at CC and we give thanks whether you give a t or you’re just starting out and able to give just a little for you are helping to make Ministry happen so thank you for
Being a part of CC and for sharing and caring with those in our building and sharing that hope out into our community as we continue in worship today check out this video as we enter our sermon series this Week [Applause] Well we are in our third week of this series this series on Hope as we look at scriptures from the Psalms and the prophets this week we’re in the gospels and we will next week look to the letters of Paul and then finish up in the Book of Revelation and we’ve been
Defining hope as choosing to believe or act as if the future is better than the past we’re looking at how hope whines through the scriptures and how when we choose to believe those words of long ago that they can frame our perspective and our lives for today each week we’ve
Had a memory verse and this week the first week it was from Psalm 40 I put all my hope in the Lord Pastor Jake focused on on that Hebrew word Cava meaning hope and rope and how life looks different when God is both the source of
Our Hope but also at the end of our rope last week we looked at the prophets in the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den and the Prophet Jeremiah and thought about what it means to be a Prisoner of Hope as one who looks around and who blesses others our memory verse from
Last week was Isaiah 40 uh chapter 40:3 one those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength they will Mount up with wings like eagles they will run and not be weary they will walk and not faint so this week we’re in the gospels and when I learned that Pastor Jake
Would be away and I would get to preach on the gospels I thought piece of cake do you know how many times the word hope shows up in the gospels well if you read King James which I’m not not sure any of us do it shows up one time if you read another
Version you got two or three but folks that’s not what I was expecting but as I was reading and preparing for this Adam Hamilton writes this he writes Jesus didn’t talk about Hope because he embodied hope you see Jesus incarnated hope Jesus comes as God
In the Flesh not to talk about it but to show what hope looks like so we look not to the words of Jesus but we look to Jesus’s actions to see what does Hope look like that first week Pastor Jake shared the three me main seasons of our lives
In Psalms according to Old Testament scholar William or Walter Bugan he talked about orientation when we follow God and we live as God desires but then the Psalms often get to disorientation or a time when life is going wrong you’re feeling not good you’ve drawn
Away from God and that’s where a lot of the Psalms are for that very bad no good day but Psalms almost always point us towards reorientation or taking our focus and shooting us back to God reminding us and sharing hope that you can get back to God and reorientation is about what it
Takes to make our lives draw closer to God well when we look at the life of Jesus Franciscan Fri Richard Roar uses these words he said Jesus shows us order disorder and reorder he said Jesus spends most of his ministry with people whose lives were in disorder and points and leads them back
To reorder Jesus reminds them that it is hope that leads us there but he doesn’t talk about it he shows it for Jesus is clear to have a life of being with God in a life of order we need to do the two great Commandments we need to love God
And we need to love others and that’s what Jesus wants people to do love God and love others so why so often do our lives get sidetracked do our lives become a disorder there’s three main reasons and I’m sure you have more but we’re going to stick to three sometimes our lives
Are a disorder because of our actions you see disorder happens when we start thinking about me me me and we forget about God and others in Jesus’s time these were the tax collectors who took money from the people to collect for taxes for the government but they took more to keep from
Themselves and in Matthew chapter 4 Jesus says to them change your hearts and your lives for the kingdom of of God is coming even to the people that no one else thought could ever change Jesus thought you can change too 60 times in the gospel Jesus calls
People to repent or to Cha turn their lives and their hearts he didn’t just condemn people because they made poor decisions no Jesus offered them Grace and encouragement to make the change instead of criticizing instead of yelling instead of being disappointed Jesus offered encouragement because he believed everyone could
Change and it’s to those who are exhausted from running from God and to those who are unraveling because of past actions that Jesus said to them in Matthew 11 come to me all you who are weary you who are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest that’s
A memory verse for this week come to me all of you who are weary and you will find rest for in Jesus we can find Grace and peace hope and the opportunity to reorder our lives and to get back to God last week I got the annual report
From Project Share our local community food pantry and it showed that in 2023 they served 56% more people than they had distribution than the year prior 36% more families at the Farm Stand and 570 kids each week in the summer got food from the summer feeding program but as I
Read the report what really stood out to me was their mission they aren’t just about providing food they’re about nourishing our community and Awakening hope you see it’s that tangible hard to be seen now but we are here to help help you and support you because tomorrow can
Be better than today and cuc you’ve been a huge part of making that happen you provided over $14,000 last year in direct donations we gave many hours to serving or to filling the share boxes over 800 little spice things you put together and our confirmation class was just there yesterday serving at distribution
Because Awakening hope is saying We Care about our neighbors who are hungry we are here to help you it’s being the hands and the feet of Jesus second our lives are sometimes in disorder because of our fear and anxiety fear and anxiety that can be paralyzing and can write narratives on our hearts
And in our minds that control our thoughts our feelings and our actions in Jesus’s sermon in Matthew he says do not worry about your life what you will will eat or what you will drink or about your body what you will wear and which of You by worrying can add a
Single hour to your life and why do you worry about your clothing do not worry do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring worries of its own today’s trouble is enough for today that’s five times in nine verses Jesus says don’t worry and it seems like
The people of Jesus’s time had the same trouble with worry and anxiety that many of us do today for in Jesus’s times there was Romans trying to gain conforce gain control using Brute Force there was sickness and disease but no vaccinations and no doctors and modern medicine was hundreds of years
Away and Jesus says and which of You by worrying can add a single hour to the span of your life now I read that and I think Don’t Worry Be Happy sure that’s great but it can sound sha sound so shallow and yet Jesus knows that our lives are not without challenge or
Setback not without detours and sometimes painful construction but when we operate out of God’s vision for us and we recognize that all we have and all we are is in God’s hands we can be assured that whatever comes our way we can handle because God is in
Control and because we belong to God who will be with us no matter what it’s not just singing that Bob Marley song Don’t Worry Be Happy over and over on repeats it’s remembering Cava that Hebrew word of don’t worry because you know who has the end of your
Rope Jesus was calling people back to that reminder don’t worry you know who has the end of your rope for Jesus embodies the hope that tomorrow will be better than today that your future is not your past that even if your circumstances change even if material possessions are depleted even if the
Life that you planned doesn’t work out because of Jesus you can trust and know that Jesus came to show you love and is with you is at the end of your rope and calls you to show that love to others in Miler Haiti we have a partnership with Cassidy she’s a young
Adult who years ago when she was in high school went on a mission trip to Haiti and fell in love with the community of Miler and saw great poverty and need around her across the the field from where Cassidy now lives and the preschool are the buildings that this
Past year Miler Primary School where you helped to support teachers salaries in a hot lunch program last year you funded two new classrooms and updates on a third and installed a swing set for the 96 kids Who call these classrooms school but there was a gap that Cassidy
Saw and she followed God’s leading and moved to ha as a young adult to fill the gap for kids that were 0 to 6 years old and prepare them to go to school our Christmas gift of 2022 was helping to support Cassidy as she fed people in the Miler
Community and each week last summer over a hundred people each week lined up to eat lunch and it was often the only meal they got for she is a Beacon of Hope literally breaking open those bags of rice and seeing Jesus expanded so that all could have food in
Meler she’s living like Jesus and you are financially helping to make that happen while we can’t send teams there just yet but more than money Cassidy asks for our prayers for serving in a country that is ravaged by poverty and gang violence she is a Beacon of Hope to
A community that really needs it she needs our memory prayed over her come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest so this week as you pray that verse will you pray it for Cassidy and principal Patrick and those serving in
The Miler Community where we have a partnership may they find rest in their souls so that they can continue to shine brightly as beacons of Hope in that Community I can love people like Jesus loved and may you know that you are a part of making that
Happen one final category of disorder in our lives is sometimes it’s because of our Brokenness now we all have types of Brokenness and there are many maybe you or someone you love is dealing with depression or relationship issues or heartache it’s those people who were broken that Jesus spent much of his time
With there was a leper who no one wanted to go near but Jesus finally did Jesus walked into Capernaum and he heals Peter’s mother-in-law he heals a man who was possessed by a demon he raises a girl from her B from her bed who everyone thought was dead and he stops a
Woman’s bleeding after 12 years but please remember not everyone who was around Jesus was healed physically there’s also spiritual ways of healing this past year we’ve seen a person here at CC who struggled with cancer and treatments for 17 years found healing of his Spirit when
It was time to go to heaven he was at peace and passed quickly it’s to all who are broken who are weary who are trying who are in treatment that Jesus says come to me all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens for I will give you rest
You can find the QR code to download the screen saver in your bulletin today or online if you’re worshiping it’s on our online worship page I encourage you as you see it to think not just about you but also about who around you who around
You can I care about who is broken sick or hurting for Jesus says my disciples you should care about them too so do you know someone who needs healing or a reminder of Hope this week in the past three months I’ve had two people close to our family try to
Commit suicide one with a life-threatening injury and both needing extensive support from families counselors and medical care and to be honest both times I felt completely helpless but I knew that showing up was the first step so I showed up to pray with both families as I was crying I
Showed up to remind them that even in Brokenness Jesus loves them I showed up this week and meant shoveling my driveway and then shoveling the driveway of my friend with icy powder twice and I’ve read a book about depression and suicide and Faith because personally I want to be more equipped to
Care for those around me who are struggling with mental health for it’s more than just two Among Us for Jesus was constantly being with people whose lives were in disorder and pointing them back to the reorder he cared about people who were sick and hurt and broken and says to us my
Disciples you too need to care about those around you so this week pause and think about who in this moment or this season in their lives needs a reminder that God loves them and that you do too how can you be like Jesus and show up to show
God’s love to show God’s care to show God’s heart to someone who is struggling is it a note is it flowers is it shoveling the next time the snow Hits for Jesus invited people out of disorder back into God’s Community for in God’s Community people look out for
One another in God God’s Community people take what they need and they share what they can and in God’s Community people think about their neighbors even as they think about themselves this past week I was reminded that God’s Community is much bigger than just here at cuc and in Carlile for
Jesus didn’t just stay in one town to share the message of God’s love and Community he traveled from Bethlehem to Capernaum he went across the sea he went into the hills and the valleys and for a person long ago Jesus traveled a lot and he walked I don’t walk that many places
People but today I have to share the news that as of July 1 I will be moving to First Mechanicsburg church it’s going to be very hard to leave all of you in carile but first Mechanicsburg is a great fit for my gifts and my passions
And a place where Grace will grow and have a strong kids and youth program I thought I could make it now all of us can start to worry and be filled with anxiety and fear for what’s to come but don’t worry I have taken all your worry this past week
Okay or instead we can be reminded that in times of disorder in times of change that we have to remember that God cares for us that God loves loves us and that God wants what is best for us and while sometimes we look at the short
Term God is looking far beyond what my eyes and my heart can do right now so while I am sad about this news I have this amazing piece that God is going to take care of you here at cuc and bring you an amazing Pastor to balance out
Pastor Jake that God will take care of of me and Grace as we move into something new for you have all supported and pushed me to grow you have showed me what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus to people here in carile and
Beyond youve shown me what it means to be a church that deeply cares for its pastors and one another and you have shown me what it means to Welcome All no exceptions because that’s what Jesus does so please don’t be sad but be and live into that Community of
Faith here in carile until every person in this town can say the people at cuc Live Like Jesus they love like Jesus and they trust God no matter what I want to use stories about you and your faithfulness to God for years to come as examples in my next
