Now then if you can’t go for the BMW m140i should you cut your losses completely and go with a different car all together or should you still go for the Lesser one series albeit with half the engine this is the 118i and it’s in almost the exact spec

Missing then SS you missed it it is sold anyway the small But Mighty BMW 118i it’s got the b38 inline 3 cylinder engine with 136 horsepower and 220 NM of torque not much by today’s standards but it should be good enough to pole around in what about once you hit the motorway

Though let’s do the 30 to 70 Brint so yeah not fast obviously but it’s still beat a 116d so there is that however on closer inspection you’ll notice that it lost to its manual counterpart I know very weird why my guesses due to the lower power figures the drivetrain losses of the torque

Converter automatic gearbox actually matters and comes into play it also has to shift twice to the once with the manual to get from 30 to 70 but yeah your guess is as good as mine really anyway enough figures let’s look inside this thing and see why this is pretty

Pry much the spec i’ get so firstly if you’re getting the 118i I don’t see the point in getting every option as you’ll probably upgrade the car in the future however if you don’t you do want some key features like harbon card and sound heated seats oh yeah this one doesn’t

Have that but you should get it the facelifted dials extended storage and that auto box if you live in a city then moving to the rear you get well not much room to be honest if you’re carrying adults you as the driver do have to scooch forward a bit unfortunately

Having said that though you can just about get four adults in the car as the roof line is still fairly decent in the back unfortunately though you don’t get rear climate or any armrest as standard so if it’s cold make sure you wear your coat in the back then it’s a similar

Story with the boot really you get less room than its Rivals but what room is there is well laid out no load liit a 12volt socket and some of the best shopping hooks that I’ve ever used are just some of the neat features in fact one of the neatest features for you

People with a dash cam is the secret 12vt socket hidden under the glove box yeah I bet a couple of you hadn’t seen that one before okay then tour over let’s get driving shall we so the 11 18i is 136 horsepower really enough to have

A bit of fun with well we are going to find out but driving around town this thing is a very nice little car to do it in it’s fairly comfortable sitting position is absolutely bang on typical BMW you sit nice and low you can adjust

The pit to the base of the seat and yeah it’s just a really comfy car to sit in steering is nice and light as well in Comfort mode this does have Dynamic steering so if you Chuck it into sports mode it will stiffen up the steering a

Bit add a bit more weight doesn’t really add any Fu though but anyway going over speed bumps it’s okay so this being an M sport car it does come with the slightly stiffer suspension and I wouldn’t say it’s uncomfortable but it has a tendency to Pogo a bit when

You go over bumps it’s the same problem I have with my BMW m140i it’s just not super duper refined but it’s not bad it could just be a tiny smidge better in terms of the engine though it’s just fantastic for driving around town you’ve got a wonderfully smooth Z f8 speeed

Gearbox and um yeah it’s got nice low down torque this engine it’s just very smooth very enjoyable to drive and even going around slower Corners you can feel that it is rear wheeel drive obviously a lot of owners that had this car didn’t know that um purely because

They’re just not really into cars but if you are into cars you can definitely feel this thing is rear wheel drive especially coming out of Junctions you get the odd little bit of Tire slip which is quite good fun but yeah just pulling away from the lights there gearbox does a wonderful

Job of just shuffling through gears and if you didn’t have a rev counter you wouldn’t know it was changing gears that’s how smooth it is absolutely lovely in terms of parking visibility for a hatchback isn’t the best on the market obviously you’ve got that rear wheel drive setup so you’re going to

Have a couple of compromises it’s not the worst in the world mainly because you’ve got really nice Wing mirrors that are very helpful to see out of and uh yeah it’s it’s pretty easy to place but that’s mainly just because it’s a small car the visibility at the rear window

Just isn’t the best but yet getting in a space is fairly easy you’ve got really nice accurate parking sensors on the shadow Edition Car you get parking sensors as standard on the rear of the car don’t get them on the front but you don’t necessarily need that just the

Back as obviously the visibility isn’t great then getting out you’ve got this double pull when the car’s locked with the door handle which kind of don’t understand but uh yeah getting to the first Notch is very easy because it’s a small car fundamentally so for driving around a city like London it’s fantastic

And the one thing I’ll mention about this is this feels like a proper car I don’t know if it’s because it’s rear wheeel drive or it’s the fact that you feel like you’re really sitting in it you feel very cocooned in this thing which you don’t really get from a lot of

Front-wheel drive hatchbacks mainly because you sit higher up anyway coming out of Junctions I’ll throttle and yeah there’s the rear wheeel drive feel and it doesn’t really feel slow I think that’s mainly because you’ve got a turbo just assisting you low down it picks up really nicely Actually and the engine even though it’s a three-cylinder it has quite a nice thrum to it I do enjoy the sound of this thing I think with an exhaust it would kind of sound like the new Ford Fiesta ST that’s also a three-cylinder it just has this nice sort of peppiness to it

Which I quite like Anyway in terms of miles per gallon on the motorway way um you’re supposed to get 61 which I don’t think this will do BMW smaller engines never seem to uh quite get what they quote um but on the combined cycle it

Says it’ll do 55 and I do believe that actually I think if we get a clear run today on the M25 we should do around 48 to 55 I’m hoping we get a bit more because we don’t have a huge amount of fuel in this thing at the minute um but

Yeah before we get onto the motorway let’s take this thing around roundabout get the traction control off and see if 136 horsepower is enough to have a bit of fun With right then let’s go to sports plus this puts the traction control in Dynamic sharpens up the throttle response drops the gear and makes the steering a bit heavier we can then put the gearbox into sports and unfortunately being 118i we don’t have the Flappy pedals that’s an optional

Extra but I can use the rally style shifter down here if I want to anyway let’s have a have a little taste of this thing then shall we and uh yep it’ll still uh throw you sideways just a little bit not quite as much as something like a 120d or a 140i would

But we’ve still got a fairly nice chassis steering’s nice predictable and it’s just easy to have a bit of fun with it doesn’t scare you it’s not remotely intimidating but it’s still fun right into Eco so what kind of economy we can get on the motorway this is where you kind

Of want it to do quite well because I know for a fact a 140i will quite easily do over 40 MP gallon on the motorway um so this needs to Beat It by quite a substantial margin to really be worth it in my mind uh round town obviously it’s

Going to be more efficient but on the motorway it really does need to do quite well as well but handling Wise It’s predictable it’s very smooth it’s just lovely really absolutely lovely and um yeah even though it’s a small turbocharged engine it does develop a good enough amount of power up top um

Obviously it does run out a path just a little bit above about 5 and a half thousand but you can rev it out and it’s still fairly enjoyable I’d say it’s not like some engines where you get to about 5,000 RPM and they just completely die there’s plenty of those

Yeah coming onto the motorway even in Eco BMW calibrate the um gas pedal pretty well or throttle pedal pretty well to where you can just give it a c throttle and yeah you still get a good amount of boost look at that not using full acceleration at all and it still

Accelerates perfectly quick enough I’ll say perfectly quick enough and this is where I like the m mirrors I don’t know if you can notice but the glass is slightly curved obviously this is part of most cars but on the bmw1 series it’s like even more curved so you can really easily see in

Your blind spot uh but yeah once you’re on the motorway cruise control on 70 mph I love this little green like Notch as well telling you where your speed is the way it swoops up looks really nice in fact these shadow Edition dials I think actually look better than some digital

Dashes just because they kind of look digital but they’re still analog it’s very nice but yeah once you’re on the motorway so easy to drive this thing doesn’t really tram line anywhere wind noise is very low road noise is very low it still feels like a very Posh car to

Drive and again because of that seating position you feel like you’re cocooned in the car really nicely you’re just comfortable effectively the only downside I will say to this thing is the suspension still suffers just a tad from that that Pogo uh not quite as bad as the 140i

Obviously cuz that’s got a big lump of an engine up front so something to deal with a bit of extra weight but yeah still there’s still a bit of fidgetiness in this thing uh which you do notice um I wouldn’t say it’s going to get on your

Nerves though I think overall it’s still a very comfortable very quiet cast traveling which is amazing when you consider this is just a one series it really does feel like it’s built really well um which you know when you consider for the money I think that’s

Pretty decent and this is the kind of trim I would get as well because you’ve got the harming card and sound system I think if you go for one upgrade go for a shadow Edition car because you get slightly nicer looks and you get Haron

Card and sound as standard and that is a really good speaker system for a car in this price bracket but yeah coming into a corner like this this is is where it starts to get fun you can you can feel the front kind of starting to under

Steer but then you can neutralize it with a bit of power yeah it’s just lovely absolutely lovely anyway let’s get on the motorway now and see if we can hit 55 MPG Okay so we had a literal perfect run then and we’re only just about to breach 40 MPG I really don’t know where they’re getting that 61 MPG figure from even on the urban cycle this thing is quoted as getting over 40 miles per gallon and I’m sorry I think they’re just talking out

Their backside there that’s just not true maybe you might get 50 MPG if you sit at exactly 58 M hour where it’s that it’s most efficient for about 3 hours but I mean it’s you know it’s only just done over 40 MPG fundamentally not a bad

Figure but the BMW m140i can also match that so I think if you’re looking for an efficient one series that you do a lot of miles on the motorway with I would definitely go for the 120d um as it’s got more torque as well

So you can kind of get up to 70 a bit easier and it’s not shuffling through gears on the motorway as well I think for round town this is definitely the better option as you will get above 30 m per gallon just everywhere because it’s just a small engine uh but for the

Motorway i’ definitely go with the diesel option anyway enough complaining about fuel let’s go and see how this thing drives on a twisty beange shall we okay back in Sports Plus put the gearbox into sports as well changes down the gear makes the shifts a bit sharper let’s see

What this 11 18i is like really know it’s got a fairly nice chassis not the best in the world I’ll say but it’s still rear wheel drive which is the main thing but yeah turn it into a corner it’s just really predictable really like there’s nothing really to complain

About and you can drive it on the throttle even though it’s not got a huge amount of grunt let’s go around again actually it’s just predictable should I say plant your foot nice Mustang in front and you can feel the rear kind of squirming around there’s not a huge amount of power obviously

So getting it to go a bit sideways can be a bit difficult obviously you can put some cruddy tires on the back and then it’s very easy to get sideways but most of the time it’s just the feeling of being rear wheel drive is the thing that you’re going to

Want and you know what it doesn’t really feel slow brakes they’ve just been done on this car so they’re very good feel absolutely Rock Solid which is nice uh in terms of sound it’s a three-cylinder so can do a sound Check not much but I think if you put an exhaust on this like an M sport exhaust I think it would actually kind of sound all right you know it’s got that kind of mini peppiness to it which I quite like you know coming around corners like this

You can just leave your foot planted because you just know what the car’s going to do you know you feel the rear kind of squirming around a bit it’s very nice really not a huge amount of uh feel through the steering but it is positive and you know even at speed you

Can give it a wiggle and it feels very tight that’s what I like yeah PL fit around here can feel the rear moving around a little bit Actually and you know if I force it into second gear and then pull on my foot you can there you go so you can you just have to put a bit more effort in than you usually would but it’s just so easy to drive it inspires so much

Confidence yet it’s rear wheel drive so you never get scared in it but you’re still having fun which I really like but you know being a small car as good as it is on open roads where it should be even better is on a tight twisty British B Road let’s go to one

Now and see what this little one series is like right then let’s give it some oh B three cylinder power you know what it’s not bad on a smaller Road like this you don’t actually need lot of power that’s one thing people seem to get obsessed with is not 60 times and

You know how you know what’s the top speed when are you ever doing 150 down here you just want to have enough power to have fun with and this does and the one thing I do enjoy is being able to use the power a lot of cars are so fast

These days that you can’t use the power at all whereas this you can really exploit it you can rev that little pepy engine out it’s great and again being rear wheeel drive it’s fun okay can we hit 60 before the corner let’s go from about 3 to 5,000 RPM this thing

Has quite a good amount of punch i’ say uh not quite we got to 56 that’ll do oh I listen to that engine per steering down here quite good it’s predictable easy chassis is okay suspension although it’s a bit jiggly it gets the job done and it keeps the car in control more

Importantly and it just means you can place this car exactly where you want it really very little to complain about at all one last time then That’s what I like about this engine actually it’s got a good amount of low down grunt so you don’t really feel short changed in terms of power at that it’s really not that bad you know it’s just fun it’s a silly car that’s a shame they went to a

Front-wheel drive format I can see why they did but this is just better I’m sorry it just is what a fantastic little bit of Kit so yeah I mean I think if you’re looking for not necessarily a first car because insurance will be a bit spinning

On this thing but if you’re looking for something that’s just nice to drive easy to live with and you do a lot of town driving driving and you occasionally have a B- road that you want to have a little bit of fun on I think this is a great car to have you

Know it’s got the fuel economy around town at least to not break the bank and I think on roads like that if you’re not driving like a wall like I do then uh you will save a bit of money on fuel you know we’re still doing 32 and a half MPG

If it was a 140i although it can do over 40 MPG on the motorway that would be in the low 20 now so you can have a bit more fun for your money I think and just overall it’s it’s just a nice car to drive you know you can sit

Back relax you’ve got a comfy seat to sit in I think for the money it’s just a well-built car um especially if you get the H card and sound system again please go for the shadow Edition car because it makes all the difference it looks better and

Having that HK sound system makes a huge difference into just I don’t know I think a you get the speaker grills which makes the interior look a little bit more up to date a bit nicer and um B it’s it kind of makes the car Feel Complete because if you want to

Listen to music loud it’s sounds good the stock uh sound system in this is just a bit meh to be honest so it’s definitely worth the upgrade and um yeah it’s just a nice car to drive chassis feel pretty good A lot of people complain that it’s not the

Best chassis in the world and no it’s not but it’s still rear wheeel drive and it’s still feels quite tight it feels quite Nimble and uh on public British B roads anyway it feels absolutely fantastic and uh yeah it’s a shame they went front whee Drive I think anyway as always if
