Anyone live in an area with road salt and transport your bike to the trail on a roof rack? Any advice besides rinsing off the bike when you get home? Is your bike looking crusty from doing this?
I’d imagine you’re better off with a roof rack than a hitch rack.

I have a roof rack (rockymounts) and various hitch racks (thule 2x, thule 4x) that can all support a fatbike and I just put mine in the car when I have to take it somewhere. None of the bag solutions seem perfect, salt and grime are just a pain. In both my cars, I just need to take off the front wheel to fit it in the back. I do put a cheap tarp in the car and I also use Blivet wheel covers to help with the studs.
For reference, the two cars are a VW Golf Alltrack wagon and a VW ID.4. It’s just much easier, cleaner, etc.

This is certainly a concern of mine. I have the ability to wash the bike down with warm water in my garage once I’m home. The bike gets a ton of road crap when hitched mounted and the roads are bad.

Buy a pump style garden sprayer, add a drop or two of dish soap with hot water, spray it down after transport. Wipe it down with an old towel. Takes a min or two and has kept my bike going in Minnesota for 4+ years.
