I don’t have the footage of how this driver got to this situation in the first place but their abilities at reversing make it no surprise they’ve ended up on the wrong side of the road they’re obviously too close to the curb so to get away from it they’re either

Going to have to mount the curb or drive forward they’re making some common errors which I’m going to go through a little bit later on in the video to try and help you with your reversing but I don’t think you’re going to be quite this bad I think everyone can see this

Coming apart from the driver my viewers rightly terrified and gives them space the driver of this silver Mercedes thinks that if his front of his car is pointing where he wants to be that’s where the back’s going to go thankfully they have another Shuffle before they have another go at the lamp poost

Again but quite soon they’re heading for the other one thankfully after another Shuffle and another reverse it looks as though so that this driver is going to avoid any more obstacles this level of ability is quite extreme but many drivers do struggle with this basic Exercise hi everyone that first clip proves that people really do struggle reversing and I think they’re getting worse reversing is still a part of the driving test but the maximum distance you’ll be asked to reverse is about two car length and I don’t think that fully prepares novice drivers for situations like

This some country roads literally aren’t wide enough for two vehicles let alone if a lorry came the opposite direction my viewer spots this early and holds back at a good position they’ve given themselves options with this slip Road approach in the gate they’ve also given themselves options by holding back at

The point where the road is widest but it’s the vehicle in between my viewer and the Lorry which has to do the work and they also do an excellent job they’re not rushed and they make sure they do it properly they also stop when the lry driver seems comfortable at going past

That was totally fine in this situation occasionally things do happen on driving lessons that require the student to reverse to Aid the flow but situations like this are few and far between and I think students don’t get enough practice to develop the skills anywhere near enough click that up one click I think

That’s automatic uh maybe not should probably waiting for all back here now is the room no so what are we going to do do we’re going to reverse so put us into reverse gear go check everywhere before you go move back a little move back and stay over this side come

Steer go slow and then we’re trying to get the bom back over there now so steer back to that way now big ster back this way keep looking at the back go slower look out the back a bit more good is that one got enough room to get past now

Yeah stop there you fine then check over your shoulders and off you go slowly just don’t rush better all right yeah the reverse and R Corner exercise gave students A Better Learning environment in my opinion they used to have to steer the car round a Bend work

Out where to straighten up and then continue reversing back for three or four car lens although this exercise is still on the syllabus it won’t be asked to be performed on the driving test instead you may be asked to pull up and park on the right and then reverse back

A couple of car lens quite obviously this does not make the student demonstrate an ability to apply the correct amount of steering input whilst going backwards because the car will already be in a straight line we then get situations where fully qualified drivers reverse like this this is in

Liverpool and this is a viewers clip sent in the vehicle that we’re going to be watching is this black Audi coming in the opposite direction they drive past my viewer but going forward isn’t the issue reversing is the little pa says to me they’re probably looking for somewhere but it’s

Not that long before the back everything was going well until she looked over her shoulder and then sted to the right they then see the heading towards those cars and stare to the left that’s right they did hit one of those white ballards I think this driver’s Target

Fixating on all the vehicles because you’ll see as they go past they tend to do the same thing avoiding avoiding avoiding but when they’re on the open stretch of road a little touch further the reversing improves rather than turning around though they continue to reverse and emerge backwards onto the main road at

The end some of the mistakes that that driver made are very common here are my top five tips to make your reversing more successful reverse slowly until you build up your skills when going backwards the vehicle is more maneuverable in other words you won’t need as much steering input if you

Reverse slowly and make an error it will go wrong slowly which should give you more time to fix it try not to look at where your vehicle is pointing this will cause you to make excessive steering adjustments just like we saw in the previous viewers clip Instead try and

Look at your vehicle’s movement and make small adjustments to compensate stopping the car also causes problems you can’t work out which way your vehicle’s moving unless you move when people look forward it causes much confusion just think of this could you successfully drive the car forward while looking out of the rear window

Please don’t try this by the way instead try having the mindset of thinking the steering wheel controls the movement of the back of the car when you were going forward you move the front in a direction you wish to travel and you do exactly the same with the back when

Versing looking at the floor and your mirrors is also another big no no remember to try and look where you want the car to go and not where it is by lifting your eyes up to the Horizon you will still see when you’re getting close to things but this will allow you to

Correctly assess your side to side movement and you are more likely to steer correctly rule 203 of the highway code States you must not reverse for any longer than necessary so it’s pretty difficult when practicing try and pick a quiet car park to improve your skills make sure you continue continually check

All around when reversing in fact try to make sure that your observations are faster than the vehicle speed practice moving away from a visual line and then back towards it in a smooth controlled manner once you can Master four or five car lens you should be able to coat with

Longer distances in real life if required my last point to finish is an important one larger vehicles are more difficult to reverse and motorcycles generally can’t so if you’re faced with a situation where it’s easier for you to reverse make sure you’re ready to do it keep safe everyone I’ll see you soon

Marks out of 10 from the reversing thank you

  1. I knew that the pull up on the right was now a thing (for some reason), but to hear it’s replaced the reverse round a corner? Bonkers! Do students have to reverse park in a parking bay?

  2. Did my test at the time of reverse around the bend, and reverse park being part of the test, when they removed them with reversing in a straight line i was a shocked. Car parks are already bad enough without less people learning how to reverse properly

  3. Good video. Cyclists can't reverse… and many car drivers only use the side mirrors (not rear view) when reversing. These two facts combined led to a very close 'near miss' for me whilst cycling. The car driver in front of me unexpectedly started reversing in order to help an oncoming vehicle get through on a narrow-ish section of road, but they didn't see me at all, and it was only through the intervention of a third party (a pedestrian nearby who had seen the problem and started shouting/waving at the driver) that a collision was avoided.

  4. When going down a single-track lane, please do not drive on the bumper of the car in front. I had to carry out a rapid stop as I went around a corner due to the excessive speed of an oncoming car and the car behind nearly ran into me. Also, hang back from a vehicle towing a trailer, some drivers are very good and can reverse a trailer with ease, but not if the driver behind is far too close.

  5. i took my HGV theory test the other day. i am shocked that it is so simple. speaking to some of the youngsters doing car tests i honestly dont have a clue how they are failing – so i have to assume they are not up to it. Even the hgv test was asking questions about environmental stuff, which i know from 20 years in the fuel industry is complete shite! its a joke.
drive any distance (i have covered a million+miles for work) and you can see the problem. what do the filth do? focus on speeding………..who cares about the inability to actually drive.

  6. What I don't get is, if one is good enough driver to pass the test, why then has (s)he no interest in practicing by himself/herself? When I got my driving license for car in 1981, the examiner said the words, "Now you have a driving license. That doesn't mean you're a fully educated driver. It just means you no longer nead a driving instructor to learn how to fully master driving."

  7. Just what happened a few days ago whilst on Cornwall very narrow country road. No stress, just reverse as normal when another car came head to head.

I think most people can't reverse as it's perceived too difficult and so just gives up when they first learning – do the minimum to pass. I always reverse into a car parking space as it's safer to "drive out", especially at winters/night. Reverse in during daylight, drive out at night. I tell others to practice those things that are difficult, like reverse parallel parking, reversing around a corner, reversing in quiet car park. Practice practice practice.

  8. My question with the 1st clip is why were they on the wrong side of the road (and a traffic island) in the first place?
My issue with the third clip is why is your viewer blocking the footpath on a single yellow?

  9. I've only been driving for nearly 2 years and when reversing I use my wing mirrors to judge the distance between me and other cars and the curb by using my cars door handle of the passenger doors as a reference, I've found it make it easy for me to reverse round corners and paralle park.

  10. Thankfully one of my good habbits of driving is my reversing, and i did this by always reversing to park and im mostly always more confident in doing so, a very simple thing, but it will tell you a lot when you park, you become used to not bliping the throttle and to get the correct steering motion and stay between the lines on a parking space, the only time i tend to not is when i park on the drive, as i reverse out when i go out again anyway heh.

  11. I still think its easier to reverse into a bay, than reverse out.
I got my HGV license with the Army when I was 17, so might be a little different from other people experience.

  12. My reversing skills were tested to the maximum while on a game drive in South Africa after coming down a narrow windy mountain road were turned a corner face to face with a massive bull elephant who caught by surprise got agitated and started gesturing and mock charged us. I quickly put the car into reverse and proceeded to reverse back up the windy road while the elephant kept on approaching us all the way up. Never enough space or time to do a 3 point turn after about 800m of reversing I was able to slip into a lay bye and the fella carried on past us

  13. My first driving instructor was a terrible instructor, he taught learners to pass the test not how to drive. Reversing was the worst because he had little stickers on his rear window and rear wiper that you had to line up to certain points of pavements or parked cars. I’d always ask “but what if I’m driving another car” and he’d just tell me not to worry about it because I’ll “be a driver by then”!!?! Driving lessons with my dad, who passed his test the day after his 17th birthday & apart from 1 of his many jobs involved driving were interesting to say the least when I’d explain I couldn’t reverse park because there were no little stickers 😂

  14. I got better at reversing when I learned my car was front-wheel-drive. If I think of pushing the car from the bonnet then it's a lot more intuitive what curve it will follow.
