But he is totally approachable so let’s just have a moment of quiet as we come before him in humility and we’re going to have some words on the screen now we say together God of Mercy we acknowledge that we are all sinners we turn from the wrong that we have thought said and
Done and are mindful of all that we have failed to do for the sake of Jesus who died for us forgive us all that has past and help us to live each day in the Light of Christ Our Lord amen May the god of love bring us back to himself forgive us our

So deep and so vast and yet so gentle you long to take our burdens our Brokenness to heal all of us right to the depths of our hearts help us to understand this truth more deeply and trust you more fully Lord in your mercy Ouray we bring before you our broken
World which at times seems beyond repair lives Shattered by War selfish overuse of the world’s resources and pain and suffering in many forms Lord let your kingdom come and your will be done break through the darkness and the sense of hopelessness that we might see glimmers of your kingdom here on
Earth there is always hope may your light shine in the darkness and show us how can we can be that light here on Earth we especially bring before you Gaza Israel and the Middle East for miraculous intervention to stop the fighting Comfort all those on both sides
Of the conflict who are mourning who have been displaced from their homes and who are working in the hospitals and health clinics for wisdom for leaders helping to broke a pieace lord in your mercy we bring before you other situations around the world Lord Jesus your heart breaks and Mourns for this
Fallen World more than we can understand give us strength and belief in the power of prayer and a fresh understanding of your heart for this world we lift up to you situations here or abroad that feel especially burdensome to us and we cry out to you
Knowing that you promis to give us more than we can ask or imagine we lift these situations to you now Lord in your mercy we pray for our government our King and all our leaders Lord give them wisdom and Kindle a sense of selflessness in their hearts that
They may lead in a way that benefits all and not just a Chosen Few help us to see how we can support the leaders we know and we especially think of mina James and Fay along with our local MPS and our local counselors Lord in your
Mercy and finally we pray for our parish for all the people living in Dr Street Roman Road and Aura Court in St Paul’s Parish Arthur Street Henry Street and Dary Lane in St alman’s parish and Mundy Street Mundy close and Eaton Court in St an’s close in St an’s

Bible readings on prayer if the two Bible readers would like to come up or one Bible reader Maybe Rose so we’re going to hear something about what Jesus says about prayer there are two passages this morning um on prayer one the first one is from Matthew’s gospel and the second one is from
Luke and when you pray do not be like the Hypocrites for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others truly I tell you they have received their reward in full but when you pray go into your room close the door and
Pray to your father who is unseen then your father who sees what is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not keep on bubbling like the pagans for they think they will be heard because of their many words do not be like them for your father knows what you
Need before you ask him and the second one from Luke then he said to them oh I’m sorry and thank you part is it l Luke n oh yes sorry so I say to you ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and

Sermon as he gives us his reflection on that that you will bless him as he gives out in your name and that he will receive more than he gives in Jesus name amen thank you um yes so this is the second of our talks um in our series looking at prayer
Um following the John markoma notes for those groups that are following those in their Bible study groups um during the week last week pray K pray Fay um kicked off our series on prayer it’s a good start to the sermon isn’t it Fay kicked off our sermon series on
Prayer um with a very powerful sermon if you weren’t here last week and you haven’t watched it back yet I encourage you to to do so um hold on I’ll switch from the order of service to my actual sermon that’ll probably help me and so now last week faay talked to
Us about talking to God um and this week I have the topic of talking with God and so I’m going to start with a question do we trust God this isn’t an opportunity to raise hands so I’m not taking a vote on the question but it’s an important one to
Begin with as we talk about about the topic of talking with God because trusting God is different from believing in the existence of God take this chair for example I can believe in its existence I can tell you about the chair I can tell you it has four legs red
Material black metal a decent amount of cushioning it’s not too scratchy it has hooks so it looks like it’s designed to be linked with other chairs feels quite sturdy it’s got a little shelf underneath possibly for book storage we’re in a church maybe Bibles or hym
Books I can tell you all about how great this seems as a chair for the purpose and the situation it is in I can tell other people that they should go out and buy this type of chair for themselves if they’re in a similar situation but this isn’t me trusting the
Chair the only way for me to trust the chair is to sit on it to put my weight on it and trust that it will hold me where are you in your faith today do you believe believe in God or do you believe and trust in him between us we will have different
Answers to that right now and different answers to that at different points in our lives but the question of trust leads me on to my next question are we honest with God are our conversations with God really honest are we able to tell God how things really are for
Us the good the bad even the ugly stuff or are we trying to keep stuff hidden from God are we worried that God won’t like what we have to say are we concerned that God will be disappointed in us are we frightened that our relationship with God will fall apart if
We stop being polite with him well if that’s true for you today then I’m sorry to break it to you but you’re wasting your time you aren’t hiding anything from God he’s sees it all he knows what you are longing to say to him and he wishes you
Would he’s seen you at your most disappointing your angriest your least grateful and he hasn’t walked away from you once he doesn’t want your polite carefully phrased Faith walking on eggshells to avoid damaging a relationship he wants you all of you as you are right now in this
Moment and you aren’t going to break God or his love for you by telling him exactly how it is for you in this moment he already knows but he wants to have the conversation because he loves you but how how do we get to those honest conversations with
God it is trust that allows us to be honest with God we have to get from that point earlier of describing the chair telling other people how great the chair is believing in the existence of the chair to actually putting our trust in the chair and sitting in it
That sermon illustration could have gone badly wrong if the chair failed it’s the same with our relationship with God we can believe in his existence we can describe all the amazing things about God we can talk to other people about the importance of believing in him but if we don’t have trust in
God if we aren’t going to put our weight on God and rest in him then we are never going to move forward in our own faith our own prayer lives to that place of trust and honesty with God think of the best relationships you have in your
Life I would guess that they are the relationships that have trust honesty and vulnerability at the center of them more often than not don’t we want a better relationship with God don’t we want to go deeper with him to draw closer to him then we need to find ways of
Deepening our trust in him Jes Jesus in the passage from Luke that we heard earlier talked about how none of us if our child asked for a fish or an egg would give them a snake or a scorpion instead and similarly if we believe that
God is our good father do we want do we believe he wants to give us good things or bad things that doesn’t mean we won’t have challenges to our faith still or the only good things will happen to us from the moment we place our trust in
God clearly that’s not true we will all of us have gone through some challenging and dark times in our lives and in our faith Journeys at times as well and Jesus never promises us that these times will not come in fact he quite often says the opposite that those who choose to follow
As his disciples will face trials and persecution rather than peace and an an easy life early on in my own faith I would go from feeling in a great place One Moment On Fire for God like I could do anything at all with God next to me to suddenly
Being rocked by something the next where was God in all of this why had he let this happen now when my faith had been in such such a good place how could I talk to him about it what did this mean for my trust in God for my ability to talk honestly with
Him well what does honesty in prayer really look like Matthew chapter 6 that we have heard earlier as well has two things to say to us don’t use your prayer life to publicly toot your own trumpet and two don’t think your prayer life is made more impressive by using more words or fancier
Language let’s look at the first of those firstly I want to say that I don’t think Jesus is condemning the practice of intercessory prayer thanks earlier Rosie or words of prayer from the front in church services as well where these practices are good I think God has no problem with them at
All intercessions and words from the front when we do them well are designed to lead us all in prayer and draw us all deeper into connection with God this is good and healthy and helps all of our discipleship the problem that Jesus is referring to is when our prayer life
Becomes about our own ego our own status the easy modern equivalent that I think is quite often the case is the Prosperity Gospel style of prayer where I would be stood up here at the front giving loud thanks to God for the financial blessings God has poured upon
Me and how it’s all a sign of God’s blessing on me and my work and my life but it’s not just that it’s any form of prayer or talking about our prayer life with others where instead of trying to just talk with God we’re trying to build up our own
Standing our own sense of Holiness in the eyes of others when it stops being about us talking with God honestly or otherwise when it just becomes about our own desire to be important our own desire to be seen to be holy Jesus here actively tries to discourage us from that
Nonsense and we can be quite sure that it won’t impress God either the second point is when we think our prayers will be more effective or impressive if we use clever words or longer prayers why do we think this God knows what is in our hearts he knows it before we do
Certainly before we actually open our mouths to pray why do we think using 50 words in a prayer will be more effective or persuasive than 10 when Jesus asked the blind man what he wanted the blind man didn’t reply oh Jesus you are Great and Mighty and I a
Poor lonly person should ask nothing of you but if you are so kind as to ask then let me tell you of my life that I can explain to you the 90 different reasons why you should take pity on me and why it would be so nice for me to be
Able to see the world and all that is in it and what I will do if I can see again so that you will know it will be worth it to give me my sight Etc ET etc etc no he says I want to see his prayer was not less effective
For being short and to the point Jesus already knew what he wanted he just wanted to have the conversation for the man to name it in conversation with him again hear me please I am not saying all prayers should be in the single digit form in terms of number of
Words we each have different styles and preferences for prayer and some prayer needs more words especially when we’re leading others in prayer but when we start to think that longer or fancier prayers are going to be more effective we need to stop and ask ourselves why God knows what is is in our
Hearts he knows what we want to pray so why are we beating about the bush or trying overly hard to persuade God when he knows us and loves us already so what does honesty in prayer look like how are we to talk to with God in a
Way that will deepen our trust and faith I think we could actually learn a lot from Matthew Chapter 5 where Jesus is warning against making complicated Oaths to God and instead encourages us to be people whose Yes means yes and no means no this is talking about Oaths but let’s
Apply the same principle to our prayer lives as well there’s an acronym that some of you may have heard before kiss keep it simple stupid not wishing to be rude to anyone but we often have a habit of over complicating faith and sometimes we do need to remember to keep it
Simple if you are thankful say thanks to God if you are worried tell God what you want are worried about if you are joyful and full of Praise share that with God if you are upset or angry with God share that too he knows it all he knows it all
Already but he wants to have the conversation with you he wants to be in relationship with you even when it means that things get a little bit messy look at the Psalms as examples these are the prayers and worship songs of the Old Testament gathered together and they are not all
Uniformally songs of praise and Happy Times by any means they are often gritty fearful lamenting angry confused but they are honest about where the writer is in their life and their Journey with God at that time this week has been a hard week to have to preach on talking with God
Honestly as some of you will know we have a dog called Brimley and this week we got the sad news that he has cancer and probably only has a very short time to live with we were prepared for the worst news but it still came as a shock um and
My prayers this week have been mostly angry or lamenting however my conversations with God in the midst of that have also been moments of Joy watching Phoebe take her first ride on her new stabilizer bike and the joy she felt of being able to put her baby doll on the back seat of
That new bike as well and also worry over Solomon who has been this week and had a fever the point is not any one of those prayers in particular the point is that I haven’t tried to hide or disguise any of my prayerful moments away from God 18-year-old me might have wondered
Where on Earth God was and why he allowed bad things to happen to me 34y old me still doesn’t have any terribly good answers to this but 18-year-old me definitely worried more about bringing those questions to God did it mean I lacked Faith was I not a good enough Christian if I ask
Questions 34 year old me knows where God is he’s right alongside me with me in the joy in the worry in the praise in the grief and the anger the why hasn’t gone away but the fear that God will walk away from me is no longer
There I know I can talk to God about anything and he is big enough to take it he is strong enough to take my weight even more so than this chair he is loving enough to hold me in my rages and tears is and help me stand when I have no strength left
Myself that is not to say that my prayer life is perfect or that I never make mistakes anymore but I always try to come back to that place of honesty trust and vulnerability with God how do we talk with god with as much honesty and TR trust as we
Can and we pray for his help to go further in that each time my prayer for all of us is that we have the courage to pray more honestly and openly with God every day of our lives in a minute or so we’re going to stand and we’re going to sing in
Worship and if there is something you would would like to say to God thanks Joy grief rage confusion worry then I encourage you in a moment of quiet before we start to sing to hold those prayers before God as we start to sing to use that space to continue that conversation with

James has said but whilst he was preaching I just had these words from Romans 8 which you can perhaps bring to this time of reflection and coming before God in the same way the spirit helps us in our weakness we do not know what we ought to pray but the spirit himself self
