



I can’t tell if this chain guard is long enough and it’ll save any drops, or whether it’s just too short. There’s approx a 2-3 gap between the bottom edge of the chain guard and the top edge of a link in the chain. Attached 4 pictures.

Hard to tell, it sure looks too short but it might actually work. Can’t you get it little closer to the chain? may be leaving just 1mm~1.5mm gap.
Sram usually had issue with inner drop from their mechanical groupset, but electronic groupset used to have issues the other way around, which was outer drop. Etap/AXS front derailleurs have much smoother shifting and also has smaller drop distance compared to mechanical groupset (smaller chairings), hence you should be fine without chain catcher as long as FD alignment and limit setting is spot on. But the drop can still happen even with perfect setting (usually rider error like shifting down the FD with drivetrain on big-big combo while torquing on the pedals) .
Anyway, if I were you, I would change the catcher.
