  1. I have reported several such infringements on a zebra crossing very close to where I live and right outside the local primary school. I'm pleased to say that Surrey Police do seem to pursue them when the evidence is clear. One really egregious occurrence was a truck (part of a utilities crew) parked right up against the crossing at 08:40, peak morning usage of the crossing, where you couldn't see people using the crossing at all. Extremely dangerous.

  2. I reported a car driver stopped on zigzags at a zebra crossing a couple of years ago to let a passenger out at an Essex shopping village. It was inconvenient because I couldn't overtake them while traffic was coming from the opposite direction. I believe the driver received a warning letter. The good thing about Essex Police is that you can find out the outcome on their website.

  3. Well spotted, Mike.
I can't believe we have drivers on our roads who don't understand this! There's no exemptions for alighting or unloading, there's no "Oh but, I'm only going to be a few seconds", the law is crystal clear. It's not permitted.

  4. I'm glad you're highlighting this dreadful habit. Parking on zig-zags is jumped on from a great height around these parts after it was ruled contributory to the death of a young child on the crossing. It's one way to get yourself in the local rag.

  5. I loathe the drivers that do this, the zig-zags are there for a reason. Many aren't aware that it's a points on your license offence. They really need to make the driving test more comprehensive!

  6. Alot of van drivers never passed their test in this country so they don't know. anyone who comes here should take a driving test for our roads. Taxi drivers where I live are mostly foreign and there are awful and have no clue.

  7. Shame about the lack of consistency across forces – I know the 5 forces Digital Evidence Team would dismiss this as "not prosecutable" without explanation – as if giving it to them on a plate isn't enough 🙄 and best of all they close it and say to "complain" which takes 28 days by which time the 7 day window to take action has passed – they're a joke of a team frankly – hopefully the Met aren't as ropey!

  8. I agree that parking on zig zags is illegal, but I’m also going to put the point across that there are two rows of small businesses all along there with very few (any?) places for stock/supplies to be legally dropped off to them.

I expect in the past there were no restrictions to parking at all. It’s a really wide street, it looks like what should happen is for the street to be modernised with a much narrower roadway, some designated parking spaces and a loading area or two and then the pedestrian crossing can be narrower too with more pavement space. And a cycle lane!

  9. Lots of motorists flout the law. They should not park within 32ft of a road junction , but many do, and for days at a time. The police don't give a toss. So what's the point of such laws?

  10. So, here’s a point to note!
Many Police Forces are pro-education. They’ll send a warning letter for some offences such as this or Red Light Jumping where they chanced it & the light went red less than a second before they went through. This is, imho, a balanced approach, & the matter is kept on record. You cant have 2 warning letters for the same offence, but you might get an awareness course if your 2nd one isn’t egregious. You cannot have a second awareness course of ANY type for Any offence committed within 36months of a previous course.

  11. This is one of my pet hates. I see it a lot in the morning, usually near schools where parents are dropping their kids off without giving two shits for the safety of everyone else’s kids !!!!

  12. If I were to report every incident that I’ve seen today, it’s take me more than a day to submit the reports. This shows how bad the the road is. For example just waiting to cross the road there were 4 drivers in a row on their mobile phones

  13. Right, i really need to start taking evidence of people parking on zig-zags if it means they get 3 points because i see people parked on zig zags daily now.

  14. Mikey, you weren't happy with the car that had stopped in the cycle lane, waiting to come out. Why? It isn't his fault that other cars have parked in it, reducing his view.

How do we report parking on zig zags? Photo to our local police? Or is it just a met thing?

  15. This is my bugbear with vehicles parking on them and especially when there are parked vehicles on the zig zags outside a school. Theirs should definitely be a fine and points.
I like it in America where the school buses stop, and the traffic also has to stop.
They should adopt that over here.

  16. Massive respect CyclingMikey, maybe one day you could do this in Cardiff, Wales? A lot of idiot drivers around that think they are "gangster" whilst they are on their phones
