So I just picked up a Pelago commuter front rack for my 1989 Trek 970 and in the process of installing, I ran into an issue at the fork dropouts. I had to use the #6 dropout attachment to connect to the only fender eyelet available, but when doing that, the leg of the rack and bolt pressed against and into the fork blade (see photos). I had to reverse the bolt so the head was inward to get more install room but after loosening and inspecting, I still caused damage to the paint on both sides of the fork where the rack legs/bolt and fork meet.
1. With weight on the rack, will this cause more damage to the paint and even cut into/dent the fork?
2. If damage would occur, what would be the best way to resolve this?
Use a slightly wider spacer and longer bolt at the fender eyelet?
Use a more flush, flat headed m5 bolt instead of the current bulbous one?
I don’t think I can use any other dropout attachment type or reconfigure the existing one based on dimensions of this bike.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
