So, let’s delve deeper into the heart of this coastal
Gem and uncover the stories that have shaped its identity over the years. Sankt Peter-Ording is a cozy town that used to be a bunch of smaller areas. Back in 1373, it was called Ulstrup, but later it became St. Peter because Ulstrup lost a lot of land due
To sand. Even the Friesians and Vikings lived here ages ago! The town merged with Süderhöft/Böhl in 1553 after a big flood. Ording, the place we know today, was mentioned in 1445. The church names St. Peter and Ording joined together in 1863, but they officially became one town,
Sankt Peter-Ording, in 1967. Life here wasn’t always easy. Sand kept blowing around, making it hard for people to fish or farm. The land often turned into sand, got salty from floods, or disappeared in big storms. Ording lost a lot of space – about 200 hectares!
Because of these challenges, many folks were poor. People called “Hitzlöper” looked for amber and collected seafood to get by. Valuables found on the beach sometimes weren’t shared because of taxes. Even ships that washed ashore weren’t safe from beachcombers.
The moving sand dunes were a headache. People had to leave their church twice because they had to dig a path through the dunes just to go to church! Planting dune grass started in 1826, thanks to the Danish king. In 1872, Ording had its first paying guests. The town really
Became a beach resort in 1877 when the first hotel was built. A sanatorium came in 1913, and in the 1950s, more places for people to recover were built because they found a strong iodine spring. The first cool beach huts were put up in 1911 and were even
Called “Giftbude” (Gift Shack) because they had “gift” (something) – it meant fancy drinks like cognac! Roads and bridges got better over time, making it easier to get around. Sankt Peter-Ording has also been in movies and TV shows, like one with Jan Delay and another with Scooter. In 2011,
They filmed part of a movie called “Rubbeldiekatz” near the pier with around 200 extras. Cool, right? Sankt Peter-Ording holds the distinction of being a state-recognized health and seaside resort. Leveraging its sulfur spring, the town promotes itself as a “North Sea Health and Sulfur Spa.”
Recognized for its healing properties, the community has earned a reputation as one of the leading seaside resorts along the North Sea coast, making it a significant hub for tourism in Schleswig-Holstein. In 2017, Sankt Peter-Ording ranked second among places on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, with an impressive
1.361 million overnight stays. When considering the entire region of Schleswig-Holstein, it secured the third position. The town accommodated its guests with a total of 17,000 available guest beds that year. Being an acknowledged seaside resort, Sankt Peter-Ording is home to several rehabilitation clinics,
Further enhancing its status as a destination that not only offers a picturesque retreat but also prioritizes health and well-being for both residents and visitors alike.
