My wife and I are considering the new [Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 AXS](https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/road-bikes/gravel-bikes/checkpoint/checkpoint-alr/checkpoint-alr-5-axs/p/42277/?colorCode=white) for bike touring and as an ‘everyday’ bike (no gravel racing, etc.). However, I’m a little worried about the gearing not being short enough for touring in the mountains with loaded bikes. The chainring is a 40T while the cassette is a 44T. Am I overthinking this? I mean, can I simply switch out the chainring with like a 36T for example or swapping the 44T on the cassette with a bigger one then problem = solved? Or, is this not as simple as that? Pardon my ignorance, but I come from the dirt bike world where changing front or rear sprockets is a non issue most of the time. I find bicycles far more complicated than dirt bikes.

Think that RD maxes out at 44. Could mullet it with a mtn RD and a MYN cassette but your looking at some cash, especially for two bikes.
