This is a 29 x 2.3 Maxxis Ikon on my 2016 Kona Hei Hei DL Trail. As you can see, the clearance is pretty minimal. The shop even mentioned it’s kind of bulging, since a 2.3 doesn’t usually look this wide. I’m looking to upgrade my tire bc I need something grippier than the Ikon. The rim (Stans s1) is sure to fit a wider tire, but I’m afraid my frame won’t. I even get some audible friction when landing a drop of just a couple feet.

What do you all think? Is this clearance concerning? Is it a frame limitation? Would a 2.4 make a difference? I’m considering a DHR or Aggressor, so any thoughts on which Maxxis tire to choose would also be appreciated. Most of the riding I do is trail with decent rock gardens, hence the desire to rid the Ikon.

Tire Clearance?

Certainly wouldn’t go any wider, and if you need a more aggressive pattern I would drop a bit (2.25) at least.

    That’s right!

  2. Looks like plenty, you only need about 5mm between the tire and frame.

If you ride a lot of thick sticky mud like clay then maybe bump that up to 10mm.

  3. I run a 2.4 front tyre on my bmx and the clearance with the forks is less than that, you should be ok.

I know it’s a different discipline/type of bike but it’s taken plenty of hammer and is fine.
