I am removing these cranks to service an old BB. I have not seen this before. Rather than a crank bolt, there is a nut that treads onto a threaded extension of the main axel. Can I use a crankpuller normally? I have already tried this, and the crank puller is not interfacing well with the cranks. Is there a way to remove this threaded portion before I use the puller?

If you’re careful, sometimes you can wedge a screwdriver between the crank and the frame and tap it down a bit. It might pop off.

Can you take the bike outside right now? Slow ride up and down the street might loosen them

A regular crank puller is all you need, but you need to back out the center pin so that there is room to thread the tool into the crank arm. Make sure you back out the center as far out as possible so that it doesn’t touch the BB when you’re tightening the tool into the crank.
