pretty much the title, how much space should i have? can the two edges exactly align or does the stem need to be somewhat above the fork tube? i’ve built some bmx bikes but i’m no expert so please inform me 🕵🏻

An 8th to a half inch should do, but as it is now there’s no space to compress so that is not enough.
toss even a thin spacer on top and you should be set. That as it is pictured won’t work.
As long as the top of the steerer tube does not come in contact with the top-bolt you won’t need any. I would probably toss a 2mm on there considering it is going to compress just a bit.
