Realized after I cut the chain that it was 1 link shorter than the old one. There’s a tiny bit of movement left in the derailleur cage. How’s it look? Should I suck it up and put another one on?

Will leave it to the mechanics to say for sure but you shouldn’t be in that gear combo anyway so that should help.
Looks like a fine way to rip a mech hangar off. Any play at all in derailleur cage?

Now that you shortened it i would ride it that way. Maybe have a look at the longer version next time. Realistically you won’t even use this gear-combo in real life.
Thanks everyone. Since this bike is going on vacation with me I’ve decided to put a new, longer chain on it and keep the short one for when I’m riding locally.
I think your b-tension screw is too tight and causing your chain to appear too tight; the upper jockey pulley looks too far from the cassette. Take a look at the instructions for setting it and then, looking from the other side of the bike, make sure it’s right.
There’s not enough S in the drive line at the derailleur. Too short
If it shifts in to 1st gear smoothly it is fine. Don’t change the beta too much to compensate or the shifting will get sloppy.
There is a guide to chain length sizing in the sram axs manual. You don’t run the chain though the derailleur, just the big rings and measure the overlap then cut to length.
Another perspective: your nice bike does not deserve to look like that 😀. Even in more relevant gear combos it will still look wrong, I’m sure.

You shouldn’t ever be riding in that gear combination anyway and this is the worst case which gives the least clearance.
