Hello there uh my name’s Steven D Ross I run glb bicycles uh I got back into cycling a few years ago uh and there wasn’t a bike shop in glenury so there was a gap in the market for somebody to fix bikes so I looked up the the nearest
Course which was you guys at life cycle uh yeah went on it a year ago last July and I got like five people go you know oh can you please fix my bike within about half an hour of getting back um so that’s how things got going
The reason I chose doing the city and girls level two uh was because it covered a really good broad spectrum of everything that I’d come across as a bik mechanic um and take me up from just being able to fix the OD brakes and things like that and actually know
Know what I’m doing and uh enough to enable me to to set the business up I I looked at all the different places I could have done the course like scitech and things um and I I liked what life cycle was actually doing I like the the
Community aspect of it which fits in quite well with what I’m trying to do here the bit I really liked was right at the end of the course uh and the most useful part was the last assessment where you basically take a whole bike to bits and put a whole bik back together
Again um that was fantastic so yeah I really enjoyed the the finale the most difficult bit the scariest bit for me was was things like um headsets and bottom brackets and you know the bits i’ never gone anywhere near it was so cool to realize they’re actually relatively
Simple um I thought that until I actually became a bik mechanic and now I realized that there actually not there’s loads of different types uh and so there’s a learn massive learning curve once I did the course about everything but that initial getting over the fear
Factor of how to fix my bike um and it gave me the confidence to know that no matter what comes along I can I can work it out uh the the cting guilds course and therefore becoming a qualified bike mechanic um it’s given me the confidence
To go out there and state I’m a bicycle mechanic I’m a professional bike mechanic I’m qualified um got my certificate on the wall from you guys which is brilliant uh and it got the business going the reason I think learning bik mechanics will benefit the community um
Is it keeps people moving keeps people out on their bikes they’re not in their cars all the time uh and what’s also really nice is a lot of people they know a few things but then they get stuck and they come to me and it’s you know within
Half a day I can send somebody on their way and they’re over the moon because their bike all a sudden works again feels like new uh and off they’re going for another year where do I see lasty bicycles going we’ve got a few interesting projects in the pipeline um Somerset County Council
Approached me and asked if we could set up a an ebite scheme for a higher ebite scheme for locals I’m also the bik mechanic for flb festival which is quite cool also equally with this place um I’ve just taken somebody on um couple days a week which is great um just cuz
I’ve just been really busy um simple as that so um I’d like that to grow I’d like bigger premises eventually but I’m quite happy where I am here really
