This ongoing Video Diary by myself John Neal, sometimes known as John Longcroft-Neal, as the whim takes me.
TODAY’S SUBJECT is a I walk into the town centre and comments as to why Nuneaton is such a good place to live.
GENERAL STUFF
I am retired from two careers of primary school teaching when I was deputy head of a Middle School and Primary School, and as a self employed Chalkboard Artist from 2002 until I reached the grand old age of 65 in 2016. Since I retired it’s like a second childhood but with more expensive toys.

I play guitar and write songs and have written about 14 songs for the local BBC radio station. I run a weekly (weakly) evening Acoustic session at a local pub and have been doing so for 14 years now. I also started an afternoon acoustic session in a quite large cafe in Nuneaton. Both premises were former songwriting clients of mine.
Much of the music I use on this channel is taken from epidemicsound.com free to use on Youtube for a reasonable monthly fee, and sometimes I suffer you with my own music.
Gear that I use:
DJI Mavic Mini 3 Drone.
Iphone 13Pro for camera, generally front facing so I can see myself in frame. Super quality especially if I keep the lens clean.
Go Pro11
Gimble is a Q2 Smooth by Zhiyun, I ought to use this more often because it was expensive.
Canon G7mk2
Sony IC recorder
Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone
Rhode videomic to do voice over on computer
Video editing with Final Cut Pro X
Polarduck Mini Tripod for mobile phone. This is so good and under £10.00 I bought two.
Lamcou bendy leg tripod
Tall Tripod is a Velbon CX 540
Mono pod is a Manfrotto Compact MMC3-02 and is very useful for getting high angles that look like low flight drone shots and so easy to carry on my bike along with the mini tripod.
My bike is a e28 Estarli electric bike.

Right I’ve done um a video quite popular one about the flood defense system because it’s been raining a lot and it’s been working well so that’s good um and I’ve done a video about the market which is on Saturday which is today and so I thought I’d just try and
Do a video about how wonderful and the neat is why I like it I just had to think about it yeah it’s a nice town it’s a nice size it’s a nice place and people knock uh the the town that they live in they always do you look on social media for
Local places and they’re always knocking it and I think well now it’s quite nice let’s think on the positive side let’s see what we can See I’m going to keep going until me Camera Falls over oh there it goes well the first thing is to get a paper from SSB one of the good things about n it’s got some very good supermarkets when I first came here about 30 years ago or more and near
About one or two but this one is excellent all well and good and uh apparently she said she’ll see me later I didn’t know I was going to see her later I saw her once very nice I mean have a good day fair enough but see you later okay maybe maybe
Not um somebody was saying that these uh walking videos no drone no music just me walking around talking to the camera um they sort of quite light so I thought I’d try the same I said before people always seem to knock the town that they’re in um and if I take some nice
Shots like this it’s all rather Pleasant this is a pond next to the river anchor which goes through the middle of town and uh very nice quite nice things to be seen this is the um Museum and art gallery what’s that have you exhibited there yes paintings and
Photographs and the park is over here of course which is very pleasant um which way shall I go let me go this way whoa morning morning well unusually it is a nice bright morning it’s cold it’s about 2.5 de uh but it’s Pleasant it’s not actually freezing the minute it has been freezing
Overnight and uh yeah this is the tail end of the park in the middle of town and the river running through the river seems to be behaving itself at the moment um because the flood defense system of which my latest popular video actually it’s got 2,000 views
Um yeah it’s done its job and it doesn’t flood in town because we had one or two really desperate storms come through right I’m now going under the road to head into the middle of town just walking across uh the George Elliot Gardens George as you may or may not
Know was not her real name it’s Maryanne Evans famous 19th century orthus and this you can see is the uh Monument to her you go around you can see maryan Evans born South Farm Arbury 1819 and those who may or may not know also so they’re not sure whether this
Building is going to be pulled down but there’s a lot of development going on here um let’s hope they leave that tree alone cuz that’s the one that the bigh community planted about 40 years ago this is the back of the council house Town Hall checked history our Council really
Various things um because in fact on this side there’s another building which mirrored the town hall itself this one over here and then with the cuts they suddenly didn’t need it anymore there we go welcome to uh George Elliot Gardens so I’m now walking uh around the back of the Town
Hall to get into the middle of town and I’ve got a bit of time to go and have a chat with a few people I’m not going to put point out the scruffy areas in town but I’m just going to go around the corner the front of the Town Hall
Here and show you this seat we got one or two really nice buildings here look at this that’s the United Reformed Church and then is the old police station which is now for sale and toet used to be a bank as well I want to show you this it’s presented by the Rotary
Club supported by George Elliot fellowship and you can see in it there’s the face of George Elliot and it’s like a book opening and there’s a pen going across so that’s a seat specially made to commemorate George Elliott well I won’t be able to show you everything there is
To see in the neon but um just wondering uh of course this is the old famous toolbx because the High Street is evolving into something new and um we’ve got a lot of Barbers uh but look there’s one we’ got about four or five of these in
Town but the toolbx selling all those bits and pieces is quite interesting um because there’s not many shops like that still surviving anyway let’s wander into the middle of town Mickey morning happy New Year you okay yes good good good how you doing where’s qu where’s your big queue oh
We’ve done it this morning we’ done a bit this morning well I’m not going to make this everything about the market because I’ve done that before so let me just take a Wonder down here around the corner I’m determined to keep this video positive but this vape shop has got
Reflected in its window look the coral betting shop opposite and it’s next door to a casino slot machine but I’ll say something about these on another occasion here I’m looking Northwest where the old Co-op building has been demolished and there’s a new hotel New College Center and the Grayson Leisure
Center whatever that’s going to be sounds good this is rosemy Rickard and her son Walter the only two of them here today they run a market store and also a Holier and Growers business out at conron and delightful people they are too in fact I’ve known this family for
Nearly 40 years and that sign which says homegrown I must have painted it for them maybe 15 years ago I’ve done anything about the market before now so many people seem to knock the neat they do they do everybody likes to knock their own Hometown I found out but
Um no so what’s good about the eating then well you’ve got a lot of shops yeah now you got you got poundland for the cheaper people you’ve got Jewelers Sam Jewelers you’ve got um caff’s Galore you can stand here no kid John and you can I
Can stand and eat in 22 places 22 from from here time to there to Sushi from boots you got boots of chemist yeah and barbers barbers how many Barbers are there Turkish Barbers men like to Smart themselves they must survive they must do business cuz they’re still there and
Nails Nails in actual he got a lot to offer yeah so what’s good about n i going be positive about Nan you’re asking me the question yeah what’s positive about n yeah have you got an answer yes go on I think it’s a very Community fo town
People all look out for each other and I think the Market’s fantastic where you got a market in the town combining with the shops and you got a few Independents I know we got people moan about the barber shops but they’re all busy they are so you can’t knock them they’re all
In business aren’t they and the other thing is like this Barber Shop opening here the O2 yeah2 I mean he’s put a serious investment in there sure so he ain’t doing it for no reason they’re not going to do they’re not D no I think it’s a
Lovely t yeah good morning good morning anyway I’ll leave you to it have a good day fantastic Town let’s be positive too much Doom and Gloom around it thank you very much I’ll use that as a quote ta I’ll just take a little sniff of this well it’s a final snapshot around
Of time oh when you doing films like this and video stuff turn around the time’s gone time come on and wake up 10:00 um I am sir carrying on mate thank you I’m the YouTube man keep carrying on mate that’s me another fine aspect of Nan is it’s multiculturalism and we have uh
Here the gerka memorial which I pointed out before and there is a local army camp Barracks where the geras are stationed and there’s a a fair number of nepes people who live in Theon anyway some of whom were not connected with the giras but and of course in the N we’ve
Also got a mosque uh two goodwi waras and that’s the siks and number of churches and uh and of course the bigh community so it’s quite a mixture of types of people Fair number of Eastern Europeans as well I think that one of the things things I
Really like I’ve just spoken to Alan somebody I know I’ve lived in this uh town on on the outskirts for the last 40 years and it’s just people that I know and I can say hello to which is a really nice thing to do it’s a sense of
Community you know we live we live here we like it we dislike it we do things for it that’s what it’s all about right I’m going to take you over to our shopping mall that’s what it is and I’m going to have to go past the front of the United Reformed Church
Which is here right this is the Rope walk and I don’t think I’ll be able to go inside and film because they don’t let you do that sort of thing but I’m next to the uh old jail house and this was the actual jail house to the police police station here it
Is it’s changed hands a few times and it um is now a cafe again restaurant whatever think yeah yeah yeah you think five neing now and I have to say this uh bottom end of town everything’s empty look because this is all getting knocked down and wheel Coes and this building
Here this is coming down I think this um quite Old Pub building here is going to stay but I still not decided whether the library is coming down which is over there of course but this power house is coming down or to be demolished as I pointed out in another video
Improvements are being made even as we speak or plans for improvements anyway here we are so as I make my way through the George Elliot Gardens again at the the back of the close which is a sort of a semi-residential place nice people but another great facility in town
Actually uh so yeah then’s got a lot to say for itself as well as now let me finish off here because we’ve got a hospital we’ve got a college we’ve got a number of good schools around a new new one being built as well secondary school
That is um up P Lane where I live and it’s easy to get there’s good connections so what’s good about n eaten and its roads or it’s good to get out of you can get away from it quite easily by which I mean actually it’s uh it’s easy to travel around the
Country because we’re right in the Midlands here so if we need to go to the late District it’s only uh two hours and to get to the South Coast two or three hours so we’re in a good position to go in other parts of the country which is
Good so it’s a good um Motorway Network we’re in the thick of which is why there a lot of logistics firms you know warehouses and travel companies I hope I’m painting a positive picture of what we got here thank you very much for watching and uh you’ll see me next time bye-bye

Wow! Do u ever look outside your front door in the morning John. 50 years ago u never saw a traffic queue outside of it. Its now at least 1 mile long leaving the town,Borough and county!!! Nuneaton is one big traffic jam. No decent shop. You can't not buy anything in Nuneaton. The council are obsessed with building houses / flats to make money from council tax. The council has 0 financial input in the town except what they really have to provide. Nuneaton is HORRIBLE. I've watched the decay!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PLACE!! OPEN UR EYES PLEASE..
A little bit of tongue in cheek I think John 😄
I’ll jump in quick and say I’d expect negative comments about our town. Every town or city seems to have a quick and loud voice to knock their own area. I am purposely only looking at the positive things to be seen in Nuneaton. Of course I could bang on forever about the downside of the town but that was not my point, which I think I point out at the start of the video.
No doubt there’s more negativity to come.
Hi John, I liked the walk around the town. It looks like a laid back friendly community with a sense of history and nature. One the comments pointed out that there is a lot of development going on, which may impact negatively quality of life. Here in San Diego we have the same problem. New housing and commercial developments result in less space for wildlife and more traffic. By the way, are there any bookstores there? Thank you for the video. I especially liked seeing some of the people who live and work there.
In our own, very small town we have lost all the banks but have gained 4 barbers, two of which only opened for business over the Christmas week. What is going on? Are hair trimmings the new currency and these people are out to fleece us? Any ideas John?
I never liked Nuneaton even as a kid in the 1980s.
In the 1990s I went to KEGS sixth form and then really appreciated what a dump the town is.
Now all the skilled jobs in factories and coal mines are gone, and it's a multi-culti dog hole with crack heads living free of charge in the old Council House.
Sorry John, not convinced
Very enjoyable video this. We also have at least 4 sports centres, a skate park, Arbury Hall, Hartshill Hayes, Astley Castle, a museum and art gallery, at least 2 local breweries. Our train station is excellent and we are not too far away from both East Midlands and Birmingham airports. Nearby we have Bosworth battlefield, Hoare Park in Ansley, Triumph visitor centre in Hinckley and that’s without looking at Coventry or Tamworth.
The Turkish barbers are a money laundering front. As it’s normal for customers to pay with cash for a haircut it makes it easy for organised crime to out in extra money and make it “legitimate”. The gangs were using car washes.
you always get haters John. The sort of people who moan they have nowhere to go will certainly not be seen when Grayson Place opens up.
