As you can see in the picture, I get the shifting cable and braking cable at the bike shop. However they are both spiral wired. (I’m pretty sure it’s shifting cable due to its smaller diameter). As I remembered for sti shifters you need straight wire cables to work. Or actually they’ll going to work fine for sti shifters? My bike use tiagra 4600 and feature outer cable routing if that matters.

I’d go back and get some proper compressionless shifter housing. The spiral wound stuff is quite cheap and your shifting will be all over the place as the housing can compress as it moves and as the tension on the system changes when you change gears. While 10 speed doesn’t need the precision that the 11 and 12 speed systems do, it’s still a tightly packed cassette at the back and you don’t need much compression to cause issues
Yeah, go back and ask for the proper parts.
Old friction and some cheap 6/7/8 systems can run brake housing for the shifter but even those run better with proper compression-less housing. On 9 speed it might work okay but wouldn’t be as crisp as it should with correct housing.
The index shifting, no matter what level, no matter what brand, *will not work properly* without linear cable. It took Shimano YEARS to figure this out, they were the first company to make it work it successfully. That was part of the secret.
Yes, helical coil compresses and that loses the accuracy.
Isn’t spiral wound outer a brake cable? Made for a different sized cable, too?
