I previously mentioned an encounter with a police officer who initially arrested me in the village. Surprisingly, this guy turned out to be incredibly welcoming. He invited me to his home and even to his friend’s house to stargaze and share a glass of wine. What was truly remarkable, however, was the impromptu history class he gave me about his region in Château-neuf-du-pape, France. The depth of his knowledge about the area was truly astounding.
This man, named Nico, was a passionate history buff, particularly about wartime history. He enthusiastically explained the significance of various landmarks – from the majestic castles to the strategic bridges. Hearing the historical context behind these structures made the entire experience incredibly enriching. Understanding why certain castles were occupied by Germans or comprehending the importance of specific bridges that linked different regions added a whole new layer to my journey.
These two days with Nico and his friends provided me with an unforgettable crash course in local history. It left me wishing that there was an app or resource that could provide such in-depth information about every place we visit. While I appreciate history, during a bike trip, it’s not always possible to have insights into every site or encounter.
Having someone like Nico, deeply entrenched in the local culture and history, generously sharing their knowledge, significantly enhances the travel experience. I believe there’s a need for an application or platform that offers this kind of local historical insight to travelers.
So, thank you, Nico, for being an unexpected and incredible source of knowledge about Château-neuf-du-pape!
