You are supposed to install Brake-pads angled, so that the front part touches the rim first. Maybe that corner of the brake-pad is used to automatically build that angle. But I’m not 100% sure…

It’s for wet conditions, the edge wipes the water and sand/dirt away. Furthermore it reduces annoying squeaking.
