It prevents the seatpost from wiggling so much but it’s a make shift clay sculpting tool I found it’s a thin piece of metal one side is rounded the other is not so one side it kind of digs in. It’s also not able to fully wrap around so I’m not sure if that creates an uneven load? It seems to work but not wanting to put the frame under pressure if this is bad . TYIA

I’m thinking it’s much less strong than steel so it digging in shouldn’t really be an issue but want to confirm

Better than compressing the frame. If it’s not sliding on you then it should be fine.
