Hi all, looking to get my first new mountain bike in close to 15 years. I’ve kinda narrowed it down to a few brands. My budget is up to $3000-$4000 tops (which feels crazy but oh well).
I see there are some great deals on Vitus and Nukeproof but I’ve also read that they might essentially be going out of business, or at least their parent company is. So is it a bad idea to get one of these in case there is a warranty issue?
There is always the option of an old established brand. I could get a Specialized (lifetime warranty!) from a local bike shop. There is a good deal on a Stumpjumper (though not as good as the Nukeproof).
Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Bike world is in fire sale mode still. I’d avoid a dead brand like vitus or gorilla gravity. Check some other brands, transition bikes, ibis, Fezzari, revel, trek, giant, etc. everything is on sale.
Currently on a revel rascal x01 I got on sale. Great bike, only had backyard rides though so far. Winter has set in now.
Nukeproof USA is already out of business. They sold their remaining stock to coloradocyclist.com. They have some good deals, but finding parts might be difficult if something breaks.
Yeah, as has been said, be careful with Nukeproof unfortunately. The parent company has apointed administrators and its still unclear if any of their aquisitions will be continuing on.
I bought a vitus on sale. Only thing you’re really getting a warranty on is the frame so maybe carbon might be sketchy with no warranty, but I was ok with aluminum. I’d do it again
Even though they are going under, it’s still a great deal if you’re looking a for a steal. If they don’t use UDH, just pick up some extra hangers in case you can’t find a brand specific.
Beware you may not have a company to contact for warranty. But hey, $800 for a $1200+ bike ain’t bad.
Stumpjumper Comp is a sick bike. Lifetime frame warranty as you said is worth a lot.
Nukeproof makes really good bikes but ANY frame service will be a huge pain in the ass if the brand survives and warranties carry over. It’s possible the brand gets spun off and existing warranties are killed off in the process.
Would I buy a Nukeproof today? Only for an absolute fire sale price (like $2500 for a carbon Mega or Reactor). Otherwise no.
That SJ is a great bike. If the prices are close I would pick a big USA brand especially if you have a local dealer they sometimes do free adjustments and if your not handy it’s helpful.
I got the SJ alloy last Feb and upgraded it thru the year and love it. I did however just look at getting a Vitus Rapide FS CRS Carbon Bike because it’s on such a good closeout its $1000 cheaper than the closest comparable model. Even if the frame can’t be warranted in a year or two the parts are worth more than it’s selling for.
I’d be staying away from any DTC brands in the current market. Even when times are good for them, if you’re not comfortable with doing all your own maintenance and repairs, it can be difficult to get the level of support you need out of them, and your LBS is likely to give you a hard time for it.
