I have my 1980 Kent BMX Trail Climber 16” that I’m gifting to my seven year old. The bottom has never been serviced! I am trying to disassemble the cotter-pin style 3-piece crank, so I can actually access the bottom bracket. I found old recommendations to use a c-clamp and a socket to create an improvised cotter press. I have been lubricating and cranking down on this stupid thing for three hours. I have actually eaten the thread away on the pin while pressing it with the nut still on. As of right now, I just filled the cavity with lube and I’m going to leave it. Unless I get a new course of action, I’m just going to give up and put it back together, and my daughter can just ride it unserviced like her big sister did eight years ago. Any new advice? Thank you.

  1. When we were kids we had bikes like this and we’d just hit the cotter pin with the biggest available hammer. Perhaps they’re not MEANT to be disposable but the are it you do that 😂
