So, having just commented in another post that I pride myself on being a good BMX builder, I am back immediately to ask a really dumb noobie type question 😁
I haven’t used pegs for years. I bought 4 for Christmas so I can get back in to grinding this year.
I bought 4 basic Cult pegs. Nothing
Special, but cheap. Just big ol toobs of metal, not sleeved.
I suddenly realised though when trial fitting them. I couldn’t remember where the grip washer goes…
1. Against the frame, outside the peg?
2. Inside the peg?
3. Leave them off?
The problem is the pegs have a smooth mating face which could cause axle slip. So it seems to make more sense to me to keep the textured surface of the grip washers against the drop outs.
But it looks a little weird. I was was wondering… does the much larger surface area of the peg’s end prevent movement even without a knurled surface?
Should I fit the washers inside the pegs instead?
Or do grinding pegs need to be able to to rotate a little against the grip washer without the grip washer moving in the drop out?
So many questions. I can see plusses and minuses for each option!
Help me! Where should the grip washers be?

The grip washers should be inside the peg against the nut
I’ve always believed you left them off.
Inside the peg, creates a better clamping force while also stopping the peg rotating when tightening up. Definitely not against the frame
I remove mine while running pegs. Never had any issues
Just wanna say I’m glad you asked this because I didn’t know.
The peg is the washer. Leave off.
Either inside the peg or not at all. Check how much axle you’ve got left inside the peg, you don’t want to add a washer and have your nut hanging only on a few bits of thread. That’s how you strip axles.
