  1. Cable probably became a bit slack. That’s normal. You can twist the barrel adjuster counter clockwise 1-2 clicks (remembering where you started) until it makes the shift.

Worst case, you may have to adjust the rear derailleur. Simple process and worth learning but quite time consuming.

It’s also possible that some bolts came loose… normal on new bikes as well. When I got my last bike, I realized the bolt that attaches the derailleur to the hanger had came loose, resulting in poor shifting.

As someone mentioned, cable stretch is normal for a new cable. Use the barrel adjuster to increase the tension. Spin it 1-2 clicks counter-clockwise, as if you are unscrewing it from the shifter or derailleur (if you have multiple barrel adjusters, pick one and stick with it for this adjustment). Shift up and down, cycling through all the gears. Keep doing this until the shifts are clean and the excessive noise is gone. Lastly stand behind the bike inline with the cogs. Make sure the chain is not rubbing against the next largest cog (too much tension). There should be a small gap between the chain and the next largest cog. It’s worth watching some park tool videos on derailleur tensioning, limits and indexing.

Edit: torque all bolts to spec as well

  3. Did you crash?

Your rear derailleur needs adjusted basically shift into the smallest cog, tighten your barrel adjuster at your shifter all the way clockwise (tighten) then back off a few turns, take your chain off, set your b limit screw so there is 5mm between derailleur jockey and smallest cog

Adjust limit screw so derailleur jockey is right below smallest cog, adjust the other limit screw so when you push on the derailleur with your hands you can’t push it into your spokes. You can figure out which limit screw is which by just adjusting one when in the smallest cog position and watching for movement on the derailleur (left or right movement). If no movement try the other screw.

Put chain on, adjust limit screw till chain starts skipping into the next gear then back off until the chain noise is quiet again.

At this point shift gears one by one into your largest cog and if you have any chain noise or skipping, shift back down, turn the barrel adjuster 1 turn counter clockwise and then try making the shift again. Still have noise, then turn the barrel adjuster again until you don’t. Go through all your gears then back down to the smallest cog

I’d watch a video but it’s intuitive once you start tinkering. If you still have issue I’d take it to a lbs and get a tune up

If you did indeed crash you may have bent the hanger which lbs can check alignment for you.

    Good luck
