Hey all, I’m looking at picking up a vintage road bike and have a few to choose from. I ride MTB 90% of the time, and most of my road riding is super casual. Just looking for something rad to cruise around with and do the occasional group ride, hence the vintage stuff.
Choice #1: Early 90’s Specialized Allez. Lugged carbon frame which makes me nervous, downtube shifters (rad), can’t tell much about component spec, but it’s super clean.
Choice #2: Look KG361. Also logged carbon frame, ultegra/105 2×9, Chris King headset, Neuvation wheels, 105 brakes. Also looks decently clean.
Choice #3: 1986ish Bridgestone 400. This guy’s a steel frame, Campy group set and brakes, Brooks saddle, Ritchey Aero wheels.
I’m leaning towards the Bridgestone purely based on the steel frame and component spec, but I really like the older carbon frames as well. Main question is, are the older lugged carbon frames as prone to failure as their reputation or are they generally ok? Second, given the choice, which would y’all buy given that they are all under $250?
