Was parked at the hospital last night visiting my dying uncle. I came out around 10pm and my bike wasn’t where I left it. Thought maybe I was at the wrong, identical looking entrance. Nope, definitely the right one. I went up to a security guard and told him what happened, he made a call and passed me the phone… they have my bike!
Very grateful that the security team caught the thieves in the act and managed to recover my bike. The bottle cage is fucked, the basket is fucked, it’s scratched up a bit and of course the lock is fucked. But the bike seems ok, still rides, and still turns on (e-bike).
Now I’m curious. Do I invest $550 in a hiplok “angle grinder proof” lock? Or better to just let the bike get stolen, pay my $500 excess, get my $7k insurance payout and buy a brand new bike? Open to any thoughts. Feels weird spending more than my insurance excess to protect the bike.

Looks like your lock did its job-delayed the theft long enough to get someone caught. Whatever you do about the new lock, box of doughnuts and a nice card for the hospital security staff is in order. Those guys get spit on, insulted and hit all the time, the good ones don’t get nearly enough appreciation.
I mean, you could pay $500 every time your bike gets stolen with a weaker lock, or you could pay $500 for an grinder proof lock and not have to worry about it again.
Use a better lock but if it’s a $10,000 bike no lock would keep it secure.
