Sunday 28th April 1996 began as any other for the residents of Port Arthur. As the coaches of tourists came into the town to visit the historic sites, shot began to ring out. As chaos ensued and people tried to work out what was happening, a tragedy was unfolding that would change Port Arthur and its people forever.

Was finally honored with a designation of a UNESCO world heritage site just 14 years before Port Arthur had become infamous again it would become the site of one of the deadliest mass shootings the world had ever seen Martin John Bryant was born on May 7 1967 in the small suburb of Newtown in

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart to parents Maurice a Waterside worker and Colleen a housewife Martin was slow to develop speech as an infant and had difficulties with forming relationships with others from a young age his mother later said that Martin often displayed destructive Tendencies from a very young age and would

Deliberately break his toys and leave the broken pieces scattered around the house he attended the local primary school and quickly gained a reputation as a difficult and disruptive student he disliked attending school and was bullied by other pupils for his lack of social skills children often chanted silly Martin no sense no feeling

Whenever they spotted him wandering around the playground he would later tell a psychologist Paul Mullen no one wanted to be my friend in a misguided attempt at bringing his son out of his shell his father gave him a pallet air rifle which only exacerbated Martin’s anti-social Tendencies as he would spend hours

Torturing and killing birds and other small animals he took great enjoyment in shooting birds out of the trees and then killing them at close range in early adolescence Martin set himself on fire and was featured on local television news reports going up to the bedroom and

Colleen were at a loss as to what to do they tried their best and Maurice spent extra time with his son taking him on fishing trips and nature walks however things didn’t get better as he grew older the problems he’d had in Primary School only continued into high school and he

In the face of the demands of the world and who sought to gain some sense of power and restore some sense of self-esteem through ridiculing or hurting others one teacher recalled of Martin at the time there was a deep-seated resentment building up the only classes Martin seemed to take any

Kind of interest in were the subjects where he could work by himself creatively such as woodworking or art it wasn’t just school where Martin had gained a reputation as an anti-social and aggressive young man it was also around the town of Port Arthur where he would often ride his bike or walk his

Parents dogs aimlessly around the ruins for hours he was banned from the broad Arrow Cafe a Quaint restaurant popular with visitors and locals alike situated close to the Port Arthur Jetty where his younger sister Mindy worked during the school summer holidays Martin had been banned from the cafe as he was

Frequently in trouble for shooting his air rifle at tourists vehicles or for spitting at people on the street in 1983 at the age of 16 Martin left high school after finishing his final year of special education classes he was still unable to read and write he received a Disability Pension from

The welfare department due to his mental age being much younger than his actual age with poor social skills a lack of qualifications and no career path his father decided to help get his son on his feet any way he could he purchased Martin an array of gardening tools from

A hardware store and encouraged his son to go door to door in the neighborhood asking if anyone needed any help with maintaining their Gardens Martin seemed to enjoy this style of work very much as it gave him the chance to work outside on his own after a few months had passed Martin had

Gained a steady stream of customers who he enjoyed working for he would happily chat with them as he cut their grass or trim their Hedges Martin even managed to make a few friends one of the friendships that Martin had struck up would change his life forever

In 1987 at the age of 19 Martin befriended a reclusive and eccentric Lottery heiress named Helen Mary Elizabeth Harvey who was living in a large but messy mansion with 14 dogs and 40 cats in Newtown Helen employed Martin to maintain her Gardens which had been left to grow wild and the pair grew

Extremely close it wasn’t long before Helen even asked Martin to move in with her and they were often seen around town spending large amounts of money on restaurants clothes and cars neighbors of Helen quickly learned to steer clear of Martin as he was often witnessed strolling around the gardens brandishing his air rifle

As though he was guarding the property and shooting at passing motorists in 1991 Helen and Martin moved to a large farm in copping and hours drive from Newtown and a 40-minute drive from Port Arthur various animals including pigs were allowed free rain within the Farmhouse and Martin had a favorite pig

That he kept in his bedroom at night their relationship was sometimes volatile and Helen later told neighbors one of these days the little bastard is going to kill me going on to say that Martin sometimes acted aggressively towards her often dangerously grabbing the steering wheel while Helen was

Driving down the street she stated that three of her Vehicles had been badly damaged in crashes due to this behavior and she always drove a lot slower whenever Martin was in the passenger seat in spite of this Helen named Martin in her last will and testament as the sole

Beneficiary of her estate and Martin often made comments to the neighbors about hoping Helen would hurry up and die so he would get the inheritance quicker which he always insisted were just jokes it seemed to those who knew Martin he was standing on the edge of a very dangerous precipice many including his

Psychologists were worried that if something unsettling happened in his life it could send him over the edge into serious acts of violence another psychologist who assessed Martin around this time in regards to his Disability Pension made an extremely worrying notation on his file father protects him from any occasion

Which might upset him as he continually threatens violence Martin tells me he would like to go around shooting people it would be unsafe to allow Martin out of his parents control after over a year and a half of living together Helen and Martin were involved in a serious road traffic collision in

Late October of 1992 when Helen’s carved into the path of an oncoming vehicle Helen was killed instantly Martin suffered serious injuries to his back and neck and was hospitalized for seven months after receiving numerous tips from Helen’s neighbors police investigated both the car crash and Martin but after finding nothing incriminating the case

Was dropped and Martin inherited assets totaling 550 thousand dollars due to his additional needs Martin’s mother and father were made Trustees of The Inheritance while Martin was still recovering in the hospital his father moved into Helen’s farm and began selling off her belongings and all of the farm animals this was something

That angered Martin and put a strain on the already tumultuous relationship with his father in August of 1993 almost a year after Helen’s fatal car accident another death occurred close to Martin ‘s 60 year old father who disappeared from The Farmhouse one day just leaving a note pinned to the front door that

Read call the police after being called by a neighbor who had spotted the notes police arrived at the property and found Martin cutting the lawn apparently unaware of his father’s disappearance Maurice was later found by police divers drowned in a dam close to the farm police ruled the death as unnatural but

Not suspicious as Maurice was known to be on antidepressants at the time of his death again Martin inherited a large sum of money and assets from his father and after selling Helen’s farm he was now close to being a millionaire over the next couple of years Martin

Changed the way he acted and dressed buying expensive suits and traveling around the world to countries such as the United States New Zealand and Japan he started to learn to surf and later took on a surfer style appearance which she had always admired growing his blonde hair longer although he never

Really improved at surfing and his expensive surfboard rarely left the rack on the roof of his yellow Volvo sedan Martin also tried to start dating something which had always been difficult for him and none of these relationships seemed to last very long with the failure of his romantic relationships his difficulty in making

New friends and the deaths of two people he was closest to Martin began to feel increasingly isolated and alone he was shunned around town for attempting to forge relationships with children much younger than himself and he was warned to stay away from the local Catholic girls school multiple

Times for loitering around the school premises he later told a psychiatrist I just felt people were against me when I tried to be friendly toward them they just walked away he was prescribed to tricyclic antidepressant to help him cope with the manic mood swings he was experiencing it

Was around this time that Martin suddenly started collecting rifles purchasing an AR-10 semi-automatic rifle from a local newspaper ad and at some point later a Colt AR-15 an l1a1 self-loading battle rifle and a usas 12 automatic shotgun Martin also started blaming his father’s suicide on a local couple David and

Noline Martin who had bought a small bed and breakfast called the Seascape near Port Arthur it was a property that Martin’s father had also wanted to buy but at the last moment while he was preparing capital for the purchase the Martins quickly bought it Maurice had been devastated

Martin came to believe that the elderly couple had deliberately acquired the property to hurt his family and remembered his father complaining bitterly about losing it to the couple multiple times investigators believe that the issues surrounding the purchase of the Seascape may have been one of the contributing

Factors that pushed Martin over the edge on the morning of Sunday the 28th of April Martin was awoken by an alarm clock at 6am this was something that was highly unusual as Martin never used an alarm clock according to his current girlfriend who was staying with him at

The time the couple had breakfast together at around eight o’clock and then his girlfriend left for home a little while after her departure Martin took out a large Blue Sports holdall and packed his rifles into it he then left his home placing the hold all of guns in

The back seat of his yellow Volvo the surfboard still secured to its roof and drove towards Port Arthur stopping a couple of times on the way at two separate gas stations to buy a cigarette lighter and then a 15 canister of gasoline at the second gas station

Martin also bought a cup of coffee and sat drinking it slowly whilst chatting to the station attendants telling them he was going surfing a fact they thought was strange as the ocean was calm that day and there were no waves something that has never been fully explained by Martin or the police

Investigators was why after leaving the second gas station and continuing on to Port Arthur Martin stopped again this time at a supermarket where he purchased a bottle of tomato sauce and placed it in the back seats with the hold all of guns body intended to do with it remains unknown

At approximately 11 45 he arrived at the Seascape he forced his way into the building brandishing the Colt AR-15 from his holdall and hit 69 year old norlene over the head with the stock of the rifle knocking her to the ground he then gagged 72 year old David before stabbing

Him multiple times with a knife he had taken from their kitchen he then shot them both dead a point-blank range he cleaned his hands in the kitchen sink and ransacked the building stealing a couple of firearms that had belonged to David around 40 minutes after murdering them

As Martin was locking the front doors to the building and returning to his vehicle which was parked outside the front a young couple arrived and mistaking Martin for the owner asked him if they could take a look at any of the available rooms at first Martin ignored them placing the

Hold all of guns back into the rear seat of his Volvo and when the young man and woman persisted he told them they couldn’t go inside because his parents were away at the moment and his girlfriend was relaxing inside the couple suddenly feeling very uncomfortable by Martin’s demeanor

Decided to leave and drove away from the Seascape at around 12 35. Martin stood by his car and watched them go they had no idea just how close they had come to something awful until they later saw Martin on the news that day seemed to go as any other for

The people of Port Arthur Sundays with beautiful weather were always incredibly busy for the town and that day was no different staff members of the Port Arthur historical sites were rushing around preparing for a hectic day by early afternoon the port was bustling with crowds of families and coachloads

Of international tourists Ian Kingston who is working as support staff that day along with 30 other staff members later told a news reporter it became obvious by about 11 that it was going to be busier than what they predicted I think about 14 coaches ended up coming in

At around 1 30 in the afternoon Martin arrived at Port Arthur and spoke briefly with Ian who was directing cars in the Port Arthur car park Ian stated that at first he didn’t recognize Martin but then remembered him from when he used to cause trouble around the broader Cafe in

His youth he later said when he drove in on the day he wanted to park down near the jetty and I pointed out to him that he couldn’t do that because they were already about eight coaches there so he got back in the car and went and parked

Down amongst all the coaches where I didn’t want him to park anyway he sat there for half a minute got out of his car and on the back he had a golf bag type of thing he mucked around on the back seat got his bag out

Put it on his shoulder then he walked up to the cafe it was just after the lunchtime rush and the bustling atmosphere had calmed down but there were still around 60 patrons finishing up their meals or looking in the adjoining gift shop Martin got some food from the counter

And sat down at a table in the balcony area outside the front of the cafe and began to eat after a little while he made a strange comment to the people sat around him saying there’s a lot of wasps about today investigators are still unsure if

This was a comment about actual wasps or if he meant white Anglo-Saxon Protestants a few moments later he spoke again to the same group of people commenting on the fact that there weren’t many Japanese tourists in Port Arthur on that particular day after finishing his meal Martin went

Back inside the cafe returned his tray and placed the large Blue hold all on one of the tables before anyone could React to what was about to happen he opened fire on the crowd people dived for cover or attempted to play dead on the floor as chaos and Gunsmoke filled

The small Cafe one man 29 year old Jason winter sacrificed himself to protect his wife and infant Son by throwing a tray at Martin as he approached them in an attempt to distract him he was shot and killed his wife and baby survived another man 44 year old Anthony

Nightingale tried to stand up to Martin and yelled at him no not here but he was also killed instantly Martin slowly strolled around the room shooting anyone that moved indiscriminately from the hip within a matter of seconds the boy who had once been banned from the premises

For shooting his air rifles at tourists had murdered 20. and seriously injured a further 15. it’s very short I’m pretty sure someone’s got a gun like everybody positive of it there’s somebody going crazy shooting people here Carolyn Lawton and her 15 year old daughter Sarah were in the cafe eating a late lunch when Martin started shooting Carolyn was seriously injured in the attack and later spoke of her experience saying I’m seeing parts of the wall being chipped away and I’m seeing him

With a very very long gun and I’m realizing that we are now actually in here with a gunman so this is all within split seconds there is no yelling there is no running it’s not like in the movies within split seconds people are either dead or they’re flat on the floor pretending to

Be dead he then came walked up behind my daughter with the gun up he was shooting people behind me in the souvenir part of the shop she would have seen that and she stood up and the look of absolute Terror on her face I stood up lunged at her

Through my arm around her neck and we dropped to the floor her head was exposed but her body wasn’t tragically Sarah Carolyn’s daughter was one of the 20 to lose their lives in the broad Arrow Cafe Martin then reloaded his rifle and left the building [Applause] outside Ian Kingston who had spoken to

Martin and witnessed him entering the broad Arrow cafe that afternoon had heard the gunfire and was desperately trying to get tourists away from the area he said that time we had a couple of coachloads of American tourists and they thought it was just some sort of show and they were all flocking around

Outside to see what was going on I got as many as I could together in the front I looked around and saw him come out of the cafe and he shot a couple of shots across the oval towards the penitentiary Lynn Beavis a nurse bravely risked her

Own life when she ran towards the broad Arrow Cafe to help as soon as she saw Martin leave the building the first victim she gave a to was Sarah Lawton Lynn later said I was at the far end of the penitentiary I saw him come out and being a nurse I

Just kind of had thoughts of how I could help those people and I went into the cafeteria and there were people everywhere bodies it’s just so Indescribable what had happened in the I thought at the time being a nurse I’ve seen dead people I’ve seen blood I’ve seen things like

This but what I saw in there nobody perhaps only a soldier would know what it was like it was awful one of the hardest things I remember was finding a young girl that was of a similar Bill to my daughter and a similar age to my daughter and one woman was asking for

Her daughter she said you’d know her she’s got a black hat on I couldn’t tell her that her daughter was dead helicopters began burying the injured to Hobart from Port Arthur after after a gunman opened fire there this afternoon we’ve had a gunman run a mock on the

Port Arthur historic side uh that’s 85ks from Hobart happened mid-afternoon they’re at least 12 confirmed that there’s not 22. locals near the site cringed in fear inside their shops and homes as the gunman opened fire everyone’s just break down what do you understand he may have done

Uh any idea why not no idea any idea who he was no no idea not a local I don’t think do you know if any tourists have been involved yes they have been that just sounds awful it is awful it’s very very awful outside the cafe Martin opened fire on

The crowds of tourists running for cover and hiding behind Vehicles killing four more and injuring another six he then calmly got into his Volvo and switched the Colt rifle for the l1a1 self-loading battle rifle and slowly drove away from the ruins of the penitentiary but he was far from done

As he was driving away on the road leading to the Port Arthur Jetty he was waved down by a 36 year old mother Lynette mccatch and her two children Nanette had mistakenly thought Martin was also fleeing the massacre Martin stopped his car next to the family got out forced Lynette to her

Knees and killed her in front of her children he then murdered her two daughters it was here as the gunman drove out of the park that he shot dead a mother and her two children sisters aged three and six police came across the body of a woman and her three-year-old daughter

Lying on the roadway and the body of the six-year-old daughter was behind the tree Pauline granfall who had witnessed the murder of Nanette and her children later told a British newspaper when he got out the car his arm went to the mother’s shoulder and he was saying get down get

Down as she was begging for her children’s lives I saw the mother fall when he shot her but I didn’t really see the little girls the little girl was behind the tree he deliberately went towards that tree to murder a little child Martin then drove another 200 meters further down the road

Before stopping to argue with four occupants of a gold BMW two couples on a road trip that was blocking off the entry to a toll booth he opened fire on the vehicle killing the driver and the three passengers instantly he then pulled the bodies from the BMW placed

His whole door on the canister of gasoline in the back seat and fled the scene in the new car leaving his old yellow Volvo behind at a nearby gas station Martin swerved in front of a white Toyota Corolla and got out of the BMW brandishing his rifle

At the 20 year old driver and passenger 35 year old Glenn Pierce and his 28 year old girlfriend Zoe Hall when Martin pulled open the passenger door and began attempting to force Zoe out of the car Glenn got out and tried to stop it however he was forced to gunpoint into

The trunk of the BMW when Glenn was locked inside the vehicle Martin returned to the Toyota and murdered Zoe as she desperately tried to escape now with a hostage Martin headed back towards the place where the massacre had first started the Seascape bed and breakfast after arriving there he forced Glenn out

Of the trunk and into the hotel where he handcuffed him to the stair rail and went back outside to shoot a passing motorists and set fire to the BMW a Siege is underway in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur where at least 25 people have been shot dead in

Australia’s worst massacre another 26 are wounded the gunman is holding police at Bay he’s believed to be holding at least one person hostage most of the victims are reported to be tourists visiting the historic penal colony at Port Arthur a few minutes ago reports put the death toll at 25 dead some of

Those killed apparently incinerated in a car near the ruins another 15 people have been badly injured within a few minutes two police officers responding to the reports of gunfire at the Seascape were also fired upon and pinned down outside they called for backup and after the arrival of a specially trained police

Unit a long and tense standoff began it’s understood The Siege has now moved to a cottage on the site the armed man apparently holding one possibly more hostages police have surrounded the cottage as Special Operations group officers continue negotiations it’s understood the gunman is a 22 year old

Armed with a machine gun what sparked the massacre isn’t known at this stage special police hotlines have been set up for people who fear for the safety of relatives it ended the following morning after Martin murdered Glenn and set fire to the Seascape causing smoke and Flames to

Eventually force him out of the property and into the custody of heavily armed police a person has been taken to do police custody conveyed to the Royal Lab at a hospital suffering from Burns no gunshot wounds the killer was taken by ambulance to Hobart Hospital under police guard and with his head covered

He’ll appear in court as soon as doctors allow Hospital staff have been praised for the way they coped with the Emergency Management denying rumors that some nurses refused to treat the government Adam molters 7 News after all the Carnage had ended 35 people were dead and a further 23 were seriously injured

Martin’s true motives have never been clear it is widely believed that the drama surrounding the purchase of the Seascape and the dunblame massacre that had occurred just over a month before when a man opened fire in a Scottish Primary School killing 16 children and their teacher were possibly two major

Factors that led to Martin committing such an awful Act although Martin has never truly explained it Superintendent Jack Johnston is in charge of police operations David Johnson spoke to him a short time ago now when you arrived at the scene here I understand that you described the scene in the tea rooms as something like War I was very perturbed when I went into those facilities down there in the

Restaurant because whilst I haven’t seen a war zone that’s what I’ve seen on the television and depicted in other Arenas as being a war zone the Prime Minister and opposition leader and Democrats leader are heading for Port Arthur this morning to pay their respects to the victims of Sunday’s

Massacre they will join the governor general from memorial service in Hobart later today last night at St Mary’s here in Hobart a very moving Mass attended by Community leaders and people from throughout this District including school children who at one stage during the mass lit a candle for every one of

Things you guys wouldn’t have a job hold on before I’m still recording this present stage so that is on important The outrage from the public was enormous and immediate the senselessness of it and how easy it had been for him to acquire the weapons led to the then prime minister John Howard imposing Nationwide restrictions on all purchases of rifles and shotguns and bans on other Firearms these laws remain in place

Prime minister John Howard responded immediately bringing forward a meeting of state and federal police ministers to Friday week to implement uniform National gun laws there is no legitimate interest served in my view by the free availability in this country of weapons of this kind on the 22nd of November 1996

He was sentenced to 35 life sentences with an additional 1652 years he will die in prison in his usual way he said something probably quite inappropriate he said he was happy with the sense but I think he meant it was appropriate what was the first thing he said

He said he’d like to have another can of Pepsi really and didn’t he could he yeah and I shared it with him As of 2023 he has never fully disclosed his motives for the massacre and is currently housed at risdom prison where he has attempted to end his life on multiple occasions his only visitor is his mother Carlene Martin is in jail he will never be free will he no

Who will visit him when you’re no longer around probably nobody and his psychological condition his mental state what’s he like that’s confidential um on even if I knew I couldn’t talk about it all I can say is that but Martin was diagnosed about three years ago is having Asperger’s Syndrome um

And he’s happy where he is at the moment Martin always when he was questioned um probably for weeks after before I saw him again he always said he was never in Port Arthur at Broad Arrow and you believed him yes but none of that was needed because

Martin said in court yes I did it and you went along with it exactly and now you wish you hadn’t of course I’ll I’ll regret it for the rest of my life a lot of people on that day uh came forward after and who people who knew Martin had known Martin for years

And they said as far as they were concerned they didn’t recognize the gunman as being Martin Bryant so many people would be very upset to hear you deny that this happened as people understand it happened what do you say to them but there’s also a lot of people that realize that Martin
