Delivery – Fools Meeting 1970 (UK, Canterbury Scene/Blues/Jazz Rock) Full Album

The group “Delivery” deserves attention if only because it served as the basis for the creation of one of the most remarkable Canterbury formations, “Hatfield And The North”. The band was founded in 1966 by guitarist Phil Miller, his older brother pianist Steve Miller and drummer Pip Pyle in Sawbridgeworth, Essex. They were joined by bassist Jack Monck and singer Dez Fisher. They performed under the name “Bruno’s Blues Band”. This is how a group appeared, which released only one album, but became a real source of talent for the Canterbury scene. In the wake of the blues boom in Britain in the late 60s, first Pip Pyle opened his Juniper Blossom Blues Club, and then Steve Miller opened Ramblin’ Jack’s Blues Club. The group performed in these clubs with such stars of those years as Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and Free. At the same time, a leapfrog began with the lineup – first Dez Fisher left, he was briefly replaced by Simon Leigh, who brought veteran British jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill into the group. He brought more freedom and improvisation to music. At the same time, the group changed its name first to “Steve Miller’s Delivery”, and then simply “Delivery”. On October 22, 1968, the musicians played on the same stage with the group “Babylon”. A few weeks later, Babylon split up and lead singer Carol Grimes joined Delivery. At the same time, Jack Monck left the group to join Ashkan and was replaced by Roy Babbington. Another blow was the departure of Coxhill, who went to Kevin Ayers And The Whole World. At the same time, the recording of the album “Fools Meeting” took place, which was recorded in a terrible hurry due to the desire of the recording company to release it at the peak of the group’s popularity. There was also an attempt by the producers to rename the group “Carol Grimes And Delivery”, as the British answer to Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. Because of this, the release of the album was delayed; the musicians worked as session musicians or looked for other groups. Although the album received excellent press, it was a big failure in terms of sales. Pip Pyle left for Gong and was replaced by Laurie Allan. In the spring of 1971, Carol Grimes left for Uncle Dog. Babbington joined Nucleus. But in the summer of 1971, Lol Coxhill returned and, with former Fairport Convention lead singer Judy Dyble joining, the group had a successful tour of the UK and the Netherlands. But after that, Steve Miller went to Caravan, where the album Waterloo Lily featured songs written for the unreleased second album Delivery. Phil Miller went to Matching Mole. And from the wreckage of “Delivery”, after numerous upheavals, the group “Hatfield And The North” was born.
