Payday the end of the month everything happened Bild up to Christmas so it be packed as much as it could be you just got carried away it was so busy the place really got busy band started you could actually feel the music there uh that night it was just

One of those nights you kind of rode the wave of the vibe in the cluther I was at home that evening and then suddenly there’ been a strange noise a really strange noise in the air it was a helicopter and we’re used to hearing the police helicopters but it

Was making a strange slow thudding Sound we’ve got a little bit of breaking news to bring you now at the moment we’re hearing that there are are reports that a helicopter has crashed into the roof of a pub we believe the bar may be called the cluther I’ve seen major incidents before and as

I walk towards it I thought wow this is a proper major incident I could see people being helped by ambulance staff and members of the public I saw a man being helped into an ambulance who was covered from head to toe in dust I look

To my right I could see a body on the ground I could see a sea of blue lights really quite a heish scene I can confirm there are a number of casualties but it’s too early at this stage to provide further Details I thought I needed to post something and uh I think I said something along the lines of I’ve just seen a helicopter crash in Glasgow did anybody else see it and my phone just lit [Applause] up the idea that social media was kind of driving this absolutely it turns

Everybody that uses it effectively into their own journalist this was sort of New You go out in a freid or Saturday night or any night for that matter you expect to come home and you expect to have a good time in between times I never take anything for granted I know not to um but you certainly don’t expect something that to happen

The arrangement with dug was I’ll meet in Central Station so we met together in Central Station four ladies from gifn who recognized dug started to speak to him and um they then went into moles because there was a band started there and I said I’ll catch you

Up I met Robert after work and our plans were that we were going to Maggie ma in the merchant City because my brother’s band was supposed to be playing there I had a friend visiting from London unexpectedly he’d invited me out for dinner and I really should have been

Going home it was a Friday night I had two children under four I was under a bit of pressure after a long week week at work to go home but I stayed out I sat with him watched him drink pints of lagger while I had a curry with Him um so i’ finished work and met my fiance and we decided we go to the cinema in the city center and the root home took us past the the CLA bar I messaged my brother he messaged me back said Mary I’m really sorry gigs been cancelled so we decided we would walk

Down towards the scotian the Closer I was actually working I started at half five and the P was actually a bit quiet when I went in but esparanza were on that night so we knew it was going to get busier we had already planned to go and see the van Des Panza and the cluther and my

Husband had seen a seat on the right hand side but by luck it was right next to the band next to the stage it was a brilliant night was really are the good well I seen Mark early on the Friday he was here and he mentioned that

He was going into the the the Clos of that night there was SC I can’t remember Namec cold night and um went into mag to have one and then um and that was really really busy then we headed down to the CL and that was even busier as we got nearer the CL became aware of we could hear the band from the outside and the music was a bit

Different it was a scab band that was on and I got really excited because I love scam music and it was absolutely jam-packed and it was even a struggle to get to the bar but we thought right okay 10 years ago I built a sentiment analysis app that would monitor Twitter

Tren the way the app worked was it collected public Tweets in a certain region to get an idea of what the general thought or feelings were from everybody so in an average Friday or Saturday night normally what I would expect then would be an elevated High we went into the sco it was really busy um and didn’t really particularly like the band that was on that night so Robert said why don’t we go over to the CLA I went around to mol and I couldn’t SE I thought maybe he’d went away and I

Ordered a pint of Guinness it turned out to be a very important pint of Guinness in terms of me um but whil I was I just started drinking it dug appeared from somewhere and said we’re heading out to the CL I’ll get you up there and I said

To him okay Doug I’ll catch up and I’ll be right behind you we had managed to find a space at the left hand side of the pub and there s of a little petition thing and was there hanging up her coats while I went to the bar to um get some drinks As I was waiting to get my drinks um I’m looking around cuz it’s been some time since I’ve been down to the pub it was my regular haunt for many many years and everybody was happy smiling you know drinking up dancing you know listening music okay that’s all right I need I

Need a break I’m going to go with a big massive pain of iced water off out the back but I don’t even think I I got past the sinks basically to come out from behind the bar Robert had gone to the bar and got his both soft drinks because we were

Babysitting the next morning um and I drank my drink quite quickly and I said to Robert I will go and get another drink and he said no I’ll get it love he says I’ll just finish my drink and I’ll go and get it um and he went

And that was the last time I saw Him I met Robert through a Meetup group as the weeks progressed Robert said to me have you ever been to the CLA or the Scotia and I said no I says I’ve never been there he says well you we have to go because the music is really good so

We went to the CLA and right away I just loved it I loved the atmosphere oh Mary of the mountains do you remember me and when you’re in fire off India or climb a hell for me originally it was the kind of FK music scene that’s where B Corley and

Jerry rafy and all these kind of people would go to jam and play and drink and and be with each other if you like so they they frequented the Scotia the Victoria and the CL at that time and there were always music going on in one of them The word the actually means CL you know a Clay’s glas cl’s Glasco For Fork the C was a really special place in Glasgow folklore really somewhere that always had a really special atmosphere a really friendly intimate atmosphere and you know in many respects a Glasgow institution it was a pub I think for people who like music but also for people who liked bit politics and

Discussion and chat which is what appealed to me people all sorts of different people that would drink in the C anything from a shoplifter to a high court judge and sometimes they meet you know the shop try to sell something to the high court judge and we’ seen that you know that

People came from all sorts of different parts of glasgo and the west of Scotland to go to the cther so it was a local but spread really wide it was a mountain pot it was a place for everyone it was just a fabulous fun place to be it really was So we walked across the river onto the walkway and I could see in the distance over Glasgow green the light from the helicopter coming towards us and I knew straight away that that’s what it was the first edition had probably gone in the newspaper and I remember having

An argument with the editor in London about a story that they were running that we disagreed on and as we were having that conversation I was climbing the stairs of the Q Park just next to the St Enix Center and for some reason I couldn’t hear the other person on the

End of the phone because of the noise of misfire an engine as it flew past I looked up at it all the lights on the helicopter went out and it rotor blade stopped spinning all at the same time as well the tail on it dipped down towards the river and it

Started to spin away from me behind a bridge out of my view and that was the last time I saw it and as I Amer from the door I could see the helicopter traveling towards me on its way to the CDE I thought um and it was misfiring and that’s when I I

Realized what was happening it just happened so quickly it was terrifying sight because I could tell it was in trouble by the the way it was traveling and the the angle it was falling and as as it was traveling towards me it completely cut out and fell out of the

Sky people say when things happen it was like a dream it was like a dream so the pup went from being very very noisy very very loud to just being deathly silent all of a sudden it was dark I didn’t see anything I was confined in a little space basically trapped underneath bits

Of Dey bits of roof bits of woods we didn’t hear a thing don’t think anybody knew what was happening well I’m making my way along cly streate when There Was An Almighty Thud then I could see a plume of what looked like smoke rising from above the

Cluther and I thought there’s been an explosion inside the pub dugs in there and I just sat off as far as I was concerned it crashed in the river and I clambered over the fence and went down onto the edge of the river I remember shouting at the edge of

The river if anybody could hear me but I couldn’t see anything it was like a mil Pond there was not a ripple in the water everything went dark there was a lot of dust thrown up people C thing couldn’t see anything my first initial thought was

You know this is a bomb a bombs went Off there was two doors in the Clos in that particular time and we always went to the left side because we quite often got a seat there um and open the doors and there was a wall of debris going from right to left I didn’t quite understand that at the time but I

Thought the inside of the pup has collapsed and whoever’s in there is in big trouble and dog’s in there obviously we knew that we had to try and get out the building because something serious had happened at that point but because it was dark people couldn’t see I’ve always got a torch in

My bag so I took my torch out and I said I put the torch on put your hand on the person in front of your shoulder and we’ll just make a chain and just walk right out the door somebody managed to find the door and open it I turned around I grabbed onto

This guy’s jacket and I got out the door and there was people starting to come out with various injuries cuts to their face and head injuries eventually when I I began to kind of a come to away but I I I looked about and what I could see was just

Carnage I managed to push the guy in front of me cuz I wasn’t sure if he was alive or not and he says I’m very frightened and I I says to him I’m frightened as well but let’s see if they can get these people out

First there was a a man called Martin I think he was one of the first ones that i’ run in and when he had me gr and he he kind of went down and c I think it one of the ones to be carried out first yeah so that’s my my

Hero at that point I looked down and I could see a person lying covered in Gray dust initially I hadn’t noticed them but as people were trying to pull him out I shouted to hold back he could have back injuries I identified myself as an ex firefighter but within a few minutes

People were were hauling him out and uh I just said try and keep him as steady as possible and we pulled them out and and I was then in a position where I was trying to render some basic first aid to that person so when we get out there and

Obviously so what’s happening I dialed 999 and I said to us you’re going to need loads of paramedics loads of fire brigade I said because there’s multiple casualties I don’t know how many there are but there’s multiple casualties there’s people on the floor outside but

Just with that an ambulance came up so I hung up and I went and spoke to him I said listen see if you give me gloves and gos I’ll go and start kind of treating people you can go and start triaging to see who you’re going to

Treat I’m a first AER so like I kind of get involved with it things like that quite easily I sort of I looked around and I just seen everybody from the cluther helping people out you know what I mean carrying people and then I sort of I

Looked down about and realized you know that H my sister wasn’t there at that point I became aware that there was somebody coming in and they were shouting right come on out try and make your way out come around this way and just at that point as I was starting

To get out I I could hear my sister’s voice from the outside screaming my sister’s in there somebody help my sister are you okay apparently I got up and I I was running towards the cloter I don’t have any memory of that no memory at all and

I’m trying to get into the cloter and I’m screaming for my sister and cuz I thought she was dead as I was standing near this woman came out and she was shouting for her sister she said her sister was still inside and I managed to get a hold of

Her and I says no you can’t go back in there I don’t know what’s happened but please don’t go back in there something awful’s happened I’m trapped and I’m in darkness I could hear my colleague behind me he was shouting for help and then I kind of

Started being more aware of of my own body and then I start getting this Sensation that my legs dangling through in the cellar but I knew my colleague had come back in because I could hear her shouting on me I could hear her telling me like reassuring me it was going to be Okay so on the night of the cluther I was actually just getting ready for bed and the phone rang so I answered the phone and it was a senior manager on duty in the control room and he said to me that the police helicopter had gone

Into the cluther bar and could I start to respond so I changed the uniform got into the car and I drove towards the scene now we have radios in our cars so that we can talk to the control room and normally the conversation between staff on the road and the dispatcher it’s a

Private conversation only the two groups can hear it but on major incidents or big incidents we open a talk group so you can hear what’s going on so I could hear resources being sent I could hear reports from the Scene the I walked across to the side of the building to look over the edge and I remember seeing a woman um who had a winter jacket on and she had high heels on she had taken them off and she ran towards what I knew was the CL of Pub

Around that corner and then I had this really awful experience of feeling fight or flight and actually what I did is I got in my car and I drove all the way down in the car car very quickly thinking right I tell you what’ll do I’ll drive to to what to what’s happened

Cuz I might be protected by the car by the time I got to the first floor I had been using the car phone to phone people in the office and I eventually got hold of one of the Deputy editors a guy called Nick McQuade and I said Nick you

Need to hold the front page I’ve seen a helicopter crash I can only imagine a lot of people have died I’m on my way back I’ll see you shortly but rally the troops get everybody back in the office it’s going to be a huge story so I managed to climb back over the

Fence and by that time I could hear sirens and I could see blue lights as well starting to come from all different directions and I remember again everything felt like it was happening in slow motion there was a lot of people Milling around I passed a guy

Who you know looked like what you see on the news when there’s been a bomb somewhere he was completely covered head to toe in dust and he was just kind of Staggering around I what happened to him and at about the same time I looked over

And it began to dawn on me what had happened because the reflection of the blue lights caught my eye and they were reflecting off the rotor FL which was sticking out of the roof of the pump but I got out of the car I met a member of our special operations response teams

Who just arrived W towards the bar and then I could see the police helicopter well I could see the blades of a helicopter sticking out of the roof of the bar I don’t really remember that point of getting out at the door but I just remember seeing Nancy you know and she

Came running over towards me she was covered you know in this kind of a gray dust and I remember saying to luk we’re okay we’re alive but just at that point Nancy collapsed and she just kept screaming it’s a bomb it’s a bomb what’s happened she says my head’s my head’s

Bleeding you know and I looked at the back of her head in my mind what I was seeing was brain matter and I’m thinking some of her head’s been blown away and I remember think she’s going to die she’s not going to make This uh guess that point an off juty nurse had came over and she knelt down beside Nancy and I was explaining to her and saying to her look I think part of her head’s been blown blown away so the nurse kind of looked at her and she says

That I don’t think that’s the case and I think she’s she’s got an injury to her head and the nurse had said her it’s not a bomb it’s a helicopter and I’m thinking why would she say that and I remember at that point I looked up at

The clo roof and I could see the tail of the helicopter sticking out so there was a guy sitting who had a huge indent in his head here and um he was just covering dust and I was like I need to put something on this to try and

St the flow of blood and I took his jumper and one of the um the things I first aid is you’ve got to promote recovery and it’s like if he gets an infection you give him antibiotics I popped his jump on said you go you hold

That and come and mean come and sit at the side of the road and that was when I get gos off the paramedic and then that was me canel away helping people the lad I was dealing with no blood whatsoever he was completely covered in dust and he was clearly

Having difficulty breathing a paramedic appeared and immediately brought out a bottle of water and and he put it straight into to this man’s throat quite forcefully and that ejected the the dust from his throat and he very quickly um recovered from that point and spluttered and coughed but I had never witnessed

This before in all my years in the fire service um because once again this situation was quite unique it wasn’t smoke inhalation it was dust inhalation then I become free to to sort of stand up again and and and my focus then goes back on it where his

Du the police had put up a cordon and and my husband was standing just the other side of the inner corner and I kind of gave him a wave and said like I’m helping here I’ll catch you up and then I was conscious of the the fabricade Personnel climbing over

There’s like kind a flower box a flower bed then and I remember them coming over and I went to give them a we hand and I laid somebody on the floor and I thought the there was a policeman with it Sorry and the policeman came around to sh me because and I realized that the man lying on the floor was dead and I thought who goes to a h on a Friday night and doesn’t go Home I parked the car again again on the bottom floor when I got out the car because I couldn’t get hold of anybody I thought I need to post something on social media to see if anybody else saw that and uh I think I said something

Along the lines of I’ve just seen a helicopter crash in Glasgow did anybody else see it and my phone just lit Up I kind of What individual tweets started getting picked up abroad by other broadcasters now we’ve got UK journalists who are probably on a night out themselves probably in their beds probably sleeping you know the new cycle was almost finished for the day uh so we’ve got journalists abroad who are picking up active events realizing

Wait a minute something big is happening across the Point it surprised me because whenever any big catastrophe happens the first thing you do is you you turn on a 24/7 News Channel quite interesting that there was no news coverage so all my news was effectively coming directly from Twitter on that night I I noticed very very

Quickly the the the sentiment of the Town went from happy to this overwhelming sense of Dread Facebook Twitter I I vividly remember how that night unfolded I was at home and I started to see something appearing on Twitter something had happened down by the river something had crashed the CLA started to be mentioned and then I remember the talk of a helicopter crashing into the

The cther I started to sort of rationally think through it’s almost half 10 in a Friday night a helicopter the only helicopters that are likely to be flying at this time on a Friday night are the police helicopter or air ambulance and just thinking oh my God it must be one of of

Them so I got my mobile phone got my shoes on and ran down to the side it was pretty near the house there was a hotel across the road where people could easily view what was going on in the CLA and details started to emerge on Twitter of course so it was

Pictures that were starting to see and possibly even I think pictures of the police helicopter on the roof of the CLA Pub watching it on television is one thing because you’re seeing it through the lens of a news agency or broadcast service where they’re giving you updates once they’ve confirmed all the details

The interesting thing about social media is you’re you’re watching this live is unfiltered so when you’re watching people tweet the their thoughts their views their their emotions their pictures their videos of the event uh you’re seeing that completely unfiltered but there does come a caveat in that the information you’re getting

May not be accurate and certainly on that night there was a lot of distress a lot of people trying their best to keep others updated document the event but with very little information the were professional journalists covering that developing event but of course it was starting to be the beginning of people

Almost becoming their own citizen journalists but you do have to consider that quite carefully about what you’re going to put on air what you’re going to broadcast in the BBC good evening and welcome to BBC News We Begin this hour with the breaking news that a helicopter has crashed into the roof of a pub in Glasgow we understand that uh people may be trapped inside the next minute the dark went to light and it was the firefighters had dug me out

Basically and the first thing I said was I’m fine and I went to get up I actually was under the impression that I was going back to work but when I tried to stand the pain hit me and I just kind of fell back down and that’s when they they

Pulled out one of those rescue boards in case it was a spinal injury and then I got taken out I don’t remember the right to the the um the hospital uh because I started getting cold in Sh for in a major incident with lots of casualties you can’t just take the first people that come out of the pub and take them to the nearest hospital you have to prioritize them so that those who are most seriously injured get treated first because in a normal situation an

Ambulance crew will look after you it’s unusual to be in a situation where you’re walking past people saying I’ll get to you in a minute the Emergency Services responded instantly but the complexity of that scene I think very quick L it meant that you know that there there was going to

Be time and effort required to understand exactly what the LIE of the land was and how they would then go about a rescue Operation slowly but surely we were being pushed back by the police to to to create an inner cordon and as I was about to be kind of moved away um another fire service group turned up and one of them was a lad I knew his name

Was David mcnali and I said to him du ASI’s in there he’s in there somewhere and he said okay Ed I’ll try and let you know bring a stretch around to put nor on to take him and he’s like come to hospital I says no I need to go and find

My family I need to go and try and contact my kids and I stood up and it was like it was hardly en day there it was mostly like fire brigade Personnel police and paramedics and I looked about and I was like wow this is kind of it was quite

Seral by this time a girl had come and was standing beside me the girl was talking to me asking my name and um and I told her that Robert was still inside the pub and I was waiting for Robert to come out and it’s while I was talking to

The girl I thought oh Judith I have to pH Judith that’s my daughter I have to pH Judith I remember getting to the Royal and I remember just being in so much pain uh and it was like in waves of pain the main injury was my leg and it wasn’t

In fact hanging through the the ceiling of the pop of the Sailor it was snapped but by this point I think a nurse had said to me actually that it was a helicopter that crashed into the pub and I just kind of looked out and I went no

It wasn’t and I thought where’s my dad my dad will tell me what actually happened he’ll he’ll give me the Truth eventually the ambulance came they tended to Nancy and they asked if I had any injuries and that says I think I’ve broughten my I can’t move my arm and they took the two of us in the the ambulance and they took us to the Victoria infirmary you know I didn’t even

Remember getting into the ambulance next thing I knew I was in the hospital with all my you my family was there and then a policeman came and moved me over towards the river and the young girl explained to the policeman that Robert was still inside so I told

The policewoman that um he took me to I gave her a description of Robert but this time my daughter and her husband came and the policeman the policewoman asked them to take me back home and it would be better they had a description of Robert and they would keep in

Touch several minutes later dve man Ali comes R up to me and says Ed we’ve got dogies alive I couldn’t believe it brilliant and the comical side of it is it’s if there’s any comedy in this at all was as soon as I saw Duke and I’m

Very much the guy I’ll shake your hand and I’ll give you a cuddle a c in background um I grabbed dug and give him a big hug and he’s got a broken collar bone and he just about takes off and it was so it was comical

At the end of the day it was it lightened the load but dogie did suffer some pain but I was so pleased to see he was alive I thought I was going to have to walk home because the to was more or less in lockdown dug was getting taken

To hospital so we went with separate ways at 10:25 p.m. yesterday evening the police Scotland helicopter came down on the roof of the cluther vaults Pub in Stockwell Street Glasgow I can confirm there are a number of casualties but it’s too early at this stage to provide further details

So our staff even though they’re used to dealing with with unpleasantness we had an added difficulty here because some of the people on scene knew the pilot including me I asked a manager I tasked him to be a welfare officer that’s not a usual task at a major incident but I

Felt with the numbers of patients and that it was very distressing for everybody but particularly because people knew the pilot and that that proved to be very useful we arrived on site at about midnight and we informed command post that we were on site with a dog there wasn’t a lot of

Shouting going on everybody was getting on with the work is something that you train for but you can’t train for we train around helicopters we train around collapse structures very rarely do we have a meeting of those two incidences Which initially taking the office the conditions were very difficult it was described as working in a mine because the collapse had caused the roof to come down to the point where you could only get in and out by crawling so the fire service were going inside and putting in wooden supports to

Make sure the roof was as stable as they could possibly make it so that our staff could our specialist staff could go inside and then check to see if if the people inside were were alive we were called forth at4 to 3 in the morning um I entered the

Building and I received a briefing from Two Fire officers The Briefing was given about searching the back of the clo down into the basement with the dog also searching around the helicopter to see if there were any other um casualties Within the rubble pile was the first time I’d seen that

Side of the pub it was very strange it was all it just like somebody closed the door for 30 years and there’s a thick clear dust and everything and then you turn around and there’s chaos there’s a helicopter sitting on a very shallow pile of rubble and the smell of Ste beer

Is actually quite heavy in the air I think it’s one of the smells I will always carry with Me as the night went on and we were getting information from the staff who had been inside that there were no obvious signs of life that for us made the the mood change we continued to treat it as a rescue until we’d seen everybody and they’d been assessed but we did have a

Darkening mood because we realized as the Night War on that there was less less and less likelihood of finding anybody Alive we’re now at uh what 3:00 in the morning local time time and uh this operation in in full swing really and showing no sign of ending it seems that this will go on all through the Night When I handed over to my colleague AR I gave him the numbers that we knew at that time uh we had a number of fatalities at that time the numbers were nine fatalities and about 30 people who were injured we knew the figures changed after that but that’s the numbers that

We had by about 8:00 on the Saturday Morning well 43 in the morning my daughter phed me and she asked me had have been watching the TV and that the there’s been a big incident in the CLA and marks in there and I dropped a phone I just instinctively knew he wasn’t coming

Out of there alive I knew he was dead from the the ear the phone Call music was his main thing in life his main his main recreation in life I’m sure Mark that evening would know just about everybody in the pub cuz he’s he was a kind of L life character you he was a big big L 6’4 you couldn’t miss him heads us heads

And shoulders above everybody he was quite IR regular in in the Closer Helicop for good afternoon the BBC understands there have been a number of fatalities after a police helicopter crashed into a busy Glasgow Pub late last Night for spee at least eight people are now known to have been killed when the aircraft struck the roof of the CLI bar on the banks of the CDE for Glasgow as a region and Scotland as a whole actually is incredibly protective I it was really interesting seeing how the sentiment changed it went from worry distress sadness overwhelming grief but then it went to protective we see it all the time in Glasgow people will come out to help their neighbors

People will come out to I help out in cases of a tragedy especially this one but what was incredibly interesting was seeing hateful comments or or angry people trying to be funny Glasgow effectively put up this digital wall and on line I’ve never seen anything like it

Before then uh we looked after our own effectively we Tred to protect our own protect our city and protect our own tragedy Effectively I think we’ve all got a tendency to sort of you know I don’t know glamorize and and be um a bit sort of Misty eyed about our own home cities or towns but there was a sense of kind of Glasgow putting its arms around itself and everybody affected with the c

And it was it was palpable and tangible and it was a strange week but one in which the sort of everything that people talk about when they they think about glasow you know the warmth of the people the friendliness of people the solidarity the you know the gness of the

City all of that came to the For St Morning and this is when everybody pulled together you know people would come to help the strength you got from that the strength that the families got from it and the staff members and you just feel you so humbled about It everybody was a hero in there that night they were all working to help each other I mean and nowadays it’s more a case of when something happens people go out pull their phone out to film it nobody was doing that they were wanting to help each other just to S say go

Let’s help these people to try and get out this Pub try and save as many people as possible and I think I did everything that I possibly could have that night um I don’t know if there was more I could have Done in the days for for weeks and it’s a big loss but you just going go on with wife you just got to go on with it Mark was a he was a great kid he was a great boy I still think was a kid to
