Then we will make a a demonstration I can say it’s a in Premier in French we would say so you will you are the first in the world to see uh a new way to to back B badges thank you so you know we are from

Open bash Factory and you know open bash Factory we have two two platforms and open bash Factory for uh creating issuing Badges and and and the passport as which is a social uh platform so uh we are very much listening to our customers and uh we have often some uh

Tricky questions uh our customers sayic yes badges are are portable should be portable because of standard but they are not really portable because we we need a backpack for uh displaying Badges and for for many customers it’s a big problem uh they would have they would

Have to to this kind of badges that just can get the badge and put it somewhere and the other things it’s at that they want badges at the same time that you can enrich that you can add evidences uh evidence sorry and you can add uh additional information on badges as

Badges as I would say learning path but at the same time say okay we would like to have the same badge but also as a sign badge which is uh fery proof that you can’t uh change so it’s it’s a bit difficult from a technical point of view so we we started

To think about Solutions and uh we were a bit uh it was interesting to to think about why PNG and SVG for for badges is it a good format anyway and uh so we question that and uh we we just uh thought about uh something like PDF portable document

Format and which is truly portable and the question was uh why not using PDF so we we develop what we call here a process where we don’t oppose there is no opposition between the host badge that can enrich that this passway badge this this learning um badge and and the

Sign badge uh we we tried to integrate this concept in what we call the Janus patch which is a two- faced go you know a badge with two faces so what is important there are the the the the metadata is important and in our um approach you can

Basically uh decide to put the metadata in different formats and not only in one so using a badge which is host badge that you can use in the backpack or in the passport but at the same time you get it has a sign batch so my colleague Auntie will show you how it

Works thank you Eric so uh in this part of the presentation I will uh go into implementation details and tell you a bit about uh how we took uh signed open patches and uh combined those with PDF files uh so why PDF uh it turns out that if you want to

Create truly portable batches uh that can be easily shared PDF has uh many good qualities for that first of all it’s uh very easy to get new users on board because everyone understands PDFs I can I can show send it to you and you immediately know what to do with it and

Also PDFs uh is an open standard and it supports metadata and signatures uh which we can use to embed the batch met metadata inside the file itself and uh there are two metadata formats and uh more useful for us is the XML based extensible metadata platform which uh looks looks a bit like

Chukut so so this is uh uh pretty much the same same thing that uh is used with SVG files so there’s the there’s the assertion tag in the open patches name space which has the verif verify attribute which contains the the metadata itself and uh in addition to that uh

PDFs have uh some options to increase the security of the file so first of all you can add a a signature to the file so we have a signed badge and in addition to that we have a signed PDF and uh we can also also maybe in the future investigate the

Possibility to use blockchains for the file file verification itself so I think it’s uh demo time let’s see how it goes so this is our our test environment here uh this is this is not not yet in production so don’t worry if you if you

Log in and can’t see this but uh I have this environment here with one badge and I’m going to issue this now and uh I’m going to issue it with a a batch application so here we have one one pending application uh I don’t know if if you’re

Familiar with batch applications but uh you can basically you can uh add uh form the badge which users can uh then fill and apply for a badge and then someone can uh approve their uh badges based on their answers so here’s an application and some from some guy here and

Uh okay an issue that like so and it comes here in my email so the batch is delivered exactly in the same way as before it goes St straight to the passport and I get an email here but uh now here’s the new thing though the email contains this uh

Download PDF link and I click it so and uh I get this page which has the all of the language versions for the badge now this badge is in three languages so I just download the English one is Here and actually let’s open that in the adober reader and so it says that um here’s a b that has been issued to me and it has all the all the criterias issue info and everything basically it has three alignments which point to ESCO and uh here is the uh application

Answers that I I was I inputed into the into the form before and it has a couple of endorsements so it’s say a one one issue endorsement and two two badge endorsements by Partners in in the obf and also this one here says that I believe that this one here says that the

Uh PDF PDF file contains signatures and the signatures are valid so we can take a look and uh I suppose it says here something like the file contents have not been changed and uh whoever signed this uh file is trusted I hope I’m not talking out of

Place here that’s what I believe it sayfe anyway and oops okay we’re back yep and and just to show that uh this is not just a just a PDF but it’s a it’s a actually a badge I can uh validate it so here’s uh our own version of the IMs IMS

Validator which uh supports PDFs so I can take the file that I downloaded Ed it here and upload it to the validator and it says that is a valid batch and the validator was able to pull out a whole whole lot of meta whole lot of su

From the this thing so so what we what we do is uh we try to embed as much of the batch data into the file so that uh it’s not not dependent on any hosting system that might go offline so it basically contains everything and like I said the the patch

Has been uh delivered into the passport already so I can I can accept that and it comes here just as normally uh but uh if if something happens like I I delete it by mistake or on purpose and I I want it back later I can just import it from the

PDF y so it says that it’s uploaded and it comes back [Applause] [Applause] and um so then what I still wanted to show you I don’t know how we are doing on time but but uh one interesting thing about this is that uh because the PDF file itself is Frozen in Time so it’s a snapshot of the badge as it was issued but

Later uh you still want to want to extend extend on the badge and enrich it so you can uh use it in passport you can add evidence get endorsements and later when you want the new PDF you can reach out to the original issuer and ask that they if

They can sign the file again so you can get the new PDF with contains all of the evidence and stuff that you have put in the batch so that way we can have this uh full full batch life cycle that’s a like Eric said it’s like a chanu badge it works both

Ways thank [Applause] you so this is really exciting to see uh a standalone badge something that uh doesn’t have to work online uh first of all a technical question when you’ve uh uploaded the badge when when the badge is hosted is it a PDF then as it’s hosted

Uh yeah it’s hosted as well so a hosted PDF so when you download it it’s you’re just downloading that same PDF from the passport from from the passport yeah uh yes currently if you download it from the passport it will be the hosted version but uh we are thinking about the thinking

About adding adding the same B um PDF functionalities to the passport as well okay and so so uh this uh feature that you can request new signatures it’s not there yet either but there would be a button on the passport and you just click that and then it uh sends a

Message to the issuer that okay this user would like would like to have this badge signed again oh signed again but I I just mean download it as a PDF again also yeah yeah and uh and of course uh if you upload a PDF we could keep that

In store and then it back to you later okay great so the other the other question I have is just um so users sometimes know nothing about badges they get an email that says here’s a badge you can download it as a PDF and use it

Uh and that’s great and maybe they just do that but what if they later think oh maybe I should have hosted that badge um is it basically then it’s up to them to set up an account and and upload the badge and go through that right so in

Other words it’s the workflow they have to pick up again and and do um when you issue a bats it’s actually issued both ways so so uh there is the same workflow that you would use currently but there’s just a PDF Link in addition to that so there is the there

Is the link I can show you There’s the link link here that would go to the passport here and and then um just says that the congratulations you have a badge and you can pick it up from here so if I can add some comments about

That because we see in uh in our customers uh for needs that for example there is let’s say a lorry driver get a badge for being able to uh to uh carry you know uh medicines for example it’s a certification if he has one badge it

Will not go in any backpack or any pass sport you just want it and for many organization it’s a bit uh it’s it’s locking the all open badge fact that you have to use uh a backpack so our our idea that you use the open BGE passport because it’s it’s a social platform

Because you you really need to to to use badges in context with other people so we we didn’t change anything about that and we will of course push a lot on the social feature of we passport our message is that you should not need a backpack just to be able to display a

Batch it’s a it’s a mistake a bit in the in the development of the old standard because PNG pictures are not really easy to share by themselves and and and the PDF it’s something that you can easily share okay thank you ah okay one last question thank you it’s a very interesting

Technology and uh just a question um with uh the the example of the the Lowry driver uh the certification is uh uh for duration specific duration and um the choice of the signature in in PDF uh is it possible to revoke it uh it’s it’s possible in certif

Uh in PDF but is it possible for Signature if it’s over for the certification uh the the the appearance appearance on on the PDF is uh it will be its close is finished it’s not signed with the good C certificate yes it is possible to revoke

Batches so uh first of all you can uh add an expiration date which shows that the okay this batch is valid only up until this date and also uh signed batches support what are called uh revocation lists so uh we can publish a document that uh lists all the batches

That are not valid anymore and then uh when you validate the badge with the validator then the validator checks the revocation list uh if the if that badge is there then it’s not valid anymore just just to say that this feature will be uh in a factory in I would say

December 25 no no no no no uh let’s say uh November we don’t know yet exactly when but at the end of November beginning of December it depend it’s already working but we have to work on the on the look and feel yeah some some technical details do still to work

Out but uh it’s coming before Christmas uh very little because there are still a lot of presentation so what’s needed uh with the standard to accept this so you were talking about the validator so uh what’s required so um well Nate is not here but uh he he

Can expect a pool request on the on the bakery actually it’s a fairly simple thing basically uh three lines of python and you can get the metadata out of the p and uh we use we use the same same uh format that is used in the SVG files

Because that is also XML based so uh when you when you get that get that data from inside the PDF then you can uh use it same as svgs so it shouldn’t be a problem you want to delete your account just delete this because portolio mer open For p mod for Uh ET P Web forol for Inter Direct portolio portol Portol Dev impl ter Con Learning Analytics Dev for Comp For per ET portfolio [Applause] LMS EX um This [Laughter] For For for mer [Applause] Henry sorry I forgot your name uh VOA thank you very much my name is Henrick uh cooler Simonson from Denmark Copenhagen business school um my presentation is a bit awkward in um in relation to some of the presentations that I’ve uh witnessed yesterday and and

Today because I may have misunderstood the term open recognition my presentation is focusing on the student and how we recognize students but my presentation is called record watch coach and recognize and um what I’ve done is I’ve uh um used screen recordings and feedback sessions to offer students concrete learning learning

Recognition so here we go um it’s a fact that students really need more recognition from their students this is from uh as far as remember um Daily Telegraph or something like that and uh the article is about dissatisfied students wanting more contact time with teaching staff I’ve been teaching English and business

Modeling and things like that at Copenhagen business school since 2003 and my experience has told me that what students really like is conversation recognition and being actually recognized this is from 2015 if we go to 2019 and take a look at the global student satisfa action uh survey which encompasses as far as

Remember 130,000 students around the globe the same facts are found here student satisfaction is measured by means of a number of parameters one of those parameters is teacher student interaction and what I’ve indicated here in this slide is my own country Mark scores 4.17 on the teacher student interaction

Scale which means that we could do uh a lot more in this area so it is a problem not not a problem but it is definitely a um huge challenge for a lot of students and also the educational system now before we go on with the re

The rest of the presentation I would like to declare my credentials I’m an external lecture at CBS Copenhagen business school but at the same time I’m director of resources and projects at an 100% online course provider called smart learning. DK I’m not uh trying to sell you anything I’m just declaring my

Credentials um at Smart Learning we have actually started a project which will be finished uh by Christmas which means that we will be offering our customers open badges at LinkedIn LinkedIn is huge in Denmark and as we’ve already seen today um open recognition is also a social

Activity so let’s take a look the two search questions that I’ve been focusing on are as follows what I have been interested in was to test a method uh with using screen recordings feedback rubrics and feedback sessions and I would like you to see some of the uh results from that from that

Experiment what I did was I uh subjected 75 students at Copenhagen Business School uh in five different interactions or control studies what I did was I gave them different uh written instructions I gave them a test case and I asked them to uh switch on their screen recorder um I have previously published

A number of articles on it tracking and I’m very much interested in what takes place at the workspace of the student what is actually taking place and by actually screen recording what they do and analyzing the screen recordings afterwards and giving them open feedback on the basis of fact-based screen

Recordings um my hypothesis was that that would be welcomed by the students and it was so what I had was approximately 75 hours of screen recordings 75 case texts self assessments and feedback sheets a lot of data and uh actually that was one of the huge challenges of this

Project what I’ve uh used as a theoretical framework is first of all the belongingness hypothesis by BME and ly the belonging hypothesis reads that human beings are fundamentally and pervasively motivated by a need to belong that is by a strong desire to form and maintain enduring interpersonal attachments and that also goes for

Students uh another aspect of my theoretical framework was the impressive work done by hagau and Viet and um hagau and Viet um came up with a model for teacher student relationship the teacher student relationship as I said previously is a challenge that we are working with in the educational system in Denmark

To improve retainment and to improve student satisfaction so let’s take a look at some of the um theoretical considerations on this method that I’ve called the r wecr method so a schematic would go like this I start up with a rubric and I ask the students to do a screen recording of a

Case then I do the data analysis on the basis of the screen recording that the students upload and I offer them feedback by means of a feedback rubric on the basis of the feedback rubric I invite students for a personal feedback session and this is where the open recognition takes

Place and in a minute I’ll show you some of the evaluation from the students and show you that it did have an impact this is a framework for how to implement the r WCR method uh over the course of a semester so instead of offering students 10 12 15

Small assignments with no recognition why not offer them three or four really full fully loaded uh recognized um assignments in the initial phase the medial phase and the final phase of the semester again this might be interesting for administrators trying to make ends meet in the educational

System so how does it look this is um a screenshot of what takes place now the case was I asked the students to create a LinkedIn sales article and um I’m not being I I can’t show you how it works now but it actually just records what the student does

So the benefit or the advantage of this um method is that you can actually to see what the student does what tools the student use uses and and and all the hows are also uh answered by using screen recordings so that was part of the uh data

So you are familiar with rubrics and this is just one example of a rubric uh used in 2017 uh I’ve divided it into below standard at standard or at or above standard so I gave them quick rubric feedback by means of crosses like this and I gave them feedback sheets

Like this this is fact-based and this is based on the screen recordings meaning tip number eight was actually identified at timestamp 0.8.1 which means that you can go to 0.8 8.11 and see what you did and why I actually propose or suggest that you do something else

So what was the impact of this uh method Katrina here uh actually was very very pleased with the uh impact and you can take a look at some of the um sentences here another type of evaluation was offered by mayen and I’ll just um read aloud just a little bit it

Helped me improve on essential areas within the field of communication I can use the individual feedback in both my further studies and in my professional career he had the ability to motivate every student to become better as he gave personal feedback in rubrics throughout his course etc

Etc and yes my ratings were very very very satis satisfactory not because I’m a good teacher I am but because the method is very powerful in my opinion another just impact was Linda I think that feedback by means of rubrics makes it very clear the use of clear

Criteria to meetmate it easier to understand Etc and I’ll just show you one more just to illustrate my point his didactical approach was really exciting and fun to try out in it was he was interested in analyzing our individual and then our working methods again Based on data because I could use

Timestamps to to actually point out to the students this is where you opened Excel sheet and you didn’t use the pivotal function correctly so please work on that so enough about the impact I’ll wrap up and try to argue for why the RWC method is a powerful tool when doing um in in

In in the educational system now first of all I would argue that it enables students to learn more about the writing processes and this is just writing processes it might have been other courses as well uh software programming or or or or something like that it also gave

Students fact-based tips and tricks and it gave students more and better feedback I would argue fourth it gave students open and personal recognition because they actually saw me they had a meeting with me where on the basis of three five seven examples from the from the video

I was able to give them future oriented feedback and last but not least I would argue that it significantly improves teacher student relationships for the benefit of all parties the teacher the student and the institution so just a few conclusions I would argue that um um the model developed it actually

Worked and um the students evaluations uh showed that they appreciated this personal feedback session and uh they also liked the fact that it was based on fact based uh feedback by means of timestamps in the videos I’ve learned a lot and um what I’ve been realizing is that the process is way way

Too time consuming uh because I need to process a lot of data and I need to spend time on personal face-to-face feedback with every single student that’s why I propose only three assignments instead of 10 well you could argue whether or not that is the the right way to go but it

It is definitely timec consuming right now I’m working on using uh qualitative uh data anal analysis software like invivo which can be Pro programmed to uh find specific uh images and sounds in videos but I’m very much uh I would very much like to hear your comments and

Ideas and I thank you very much for your attention and I forward to your question thank [Applause] you yes sorry hello thank you for your presentation um I’m wondering have you um ever IM IM imagined um Collective ways to uh analyze a very very interesting question

And comment thank you very much you are of course right because rubrics are used in feedback in peer-to-peer feedback sessions and it was not clear from my presentation but parts of that is actually also uh what I do I ask questions a I ask students A and B to to

Offer feedback to each other and then they can learn from their colleague but later on they can work or they can learn from me and my feedback thank you I should have said that yes is there a a collective uh analysis of all the data produced that was one of the uh

Limitations of the study I have all the 75 uh videos or uh movies or files and the five case uh 75 case texts and documents and uh I have not been able to do a comprehensive analysis of the 75 files so far but as I said next week I’ll try

To use envivo which is a um qualitative uh data and analysis software where you can load all files and do uh Global searches for for example specific words or sentences yeah so that’s actually a great segue to my question which is um have you considered uses of uh machine learning

Or other aspects of AI to do this and maybe even to provide the feedbacks to students and maybe even fool the students that you might be a human being thank you very much sir um at Smart Learning I’m um um running nine 10 different research projects and three of

Them are within artificial intelligence in learning and teaching and of course yes you’re right uh all these files should be fed to uh machine learning bot or something like that and and I would probably in a few years time be able to offer chatbot based feedback you’re right yeah thank you thank you

[Applause] mer ah hello we need to talk about blockchains GR Inter BL um For For For face Facebook Facebook m B Sat Di pH Pern Cre MIT C Employer Association um France for for Open day open open source open education Open Access open recognition leadership for Digital credential Voila T [Applause] Merc blockchain the Sky with Diamonds blockchain Blain distributed application BL the blockchain Pedic blockchain say um on Wednesday somebody said interest something interesting about blockchains when Nate was going through the various Technologies and that was that traditionally what you were just saying it’s very expensive to put content on the blockchain uh it’s just validations of content is typically what’s put on

But this person said there was a new techn ology that was being investigated or being used where you could put content and blockchain it at the same time so in other words it wasn’t just a check sum it was the actual content being put on there and validated at the

Same time do you know anything about that or I can’t I can’t tell I couldn’t tell you who said it it was just yes this is the first question I I have heard that someone said that I should have presented with my vice president Pierre bouet

Uh who is uh not only the vice president for digitalization of the University but also a researcher and informatics um what we believe and typically is an informatic researcher on low low low energy uh Technologies so what we hope is that the ash of a document will be enough to

Identify that what the person is saying is true and from Auto defied Source so that in the end you have less copy less bits on servers and it’s much more easy to facilitate the transfer of the ash of the of the datas directly from one computer to another so what I thought

When I heard that someone said that on Wednesday I thought this is maybe because first the blockchain doesn’t need to be to to need uh so much energy it doesn’t need to mine so much to produce a good result on data and the Ash will be a solution that is very

Interoperable and um easy to to use for the end user and um and so that um so that in the end it will make also less copies everywhere so this is maybe why he he or she said that yes someone is a thank you for your presentation um I

Have sort of a two-part question uh the first part is um is fraud a problem in your general system uh as it relates to educational diplomas and certificates yeah the private companies who sell their service around blockchain they said that there is up to 30% of

Frauds in diplomats but I don’t think so I have checked with the scholar here and uh there is no numbers nobody knows uh secondly in the there are companies that are dedicated to scrolling CVS and diploma is only one part of what the people are telling you you know so it’s

Not only a diploma question it’s about all the Declaration on the CV and and uh the question is always where it’s when it’s a lie and a fraud and when it’s just trying to get a job you know and you improve what you say so in

The end at least it will facilitate to issue um a a verif variable uh a verif varable diploma but not only any certificates so because uh employers are not just asking for the diploma they’re asking for many other things and it would be easier to use it

So that’s the premise of my question is is that um in my context I’ve had difficulty sometimes uh helping registrars or other people that are involved in the certificates of Education become interested in blockchains the the real affordance as your presentation demonstrated is the unbundling of the higher education

Experience if we can have agreement um and discipline about subcategories of accomplishment uh that are alternative to earning a full degree then we could exchange those tokens exactly across the system but if the entry point institutionally is to solve the problem of fraud then we lose sight of the

Greater benefit of unbundling the educational experience and I just wonder if if you experienced that what I always say it’s I I I don’t mind of the 8% or 20% of false declaration or false diploma I care about 100% of compliance because through that system from an authentify source to a digital Sovereign

Identity of the students who has become a citizen it would be a it would make people able to to tackle you know the the whole problem the whole process so in that in when when you when you address 100% of compliance you are rendering a better

Service to the citizen in the end and to higher education institution because nowaday what happens is that you are asked in Singapore to to show your diploma in August and there is nobody you can’t call anyone and you you don’t know where is your diploma and so on so

It will be available at any time and I will give more data it will be from an auied Source what the paper today which should be kept what the paper doesn’t do uh last question please M BL for For Li C For [Applause] Blain Dom L ex leave your computer on side because it’s about about two hours we are sitting here so stand up now everybody stand up yeah stand up and now we move The leg the leg up up up up Side morning Li [Applause] yeah down and breathe now during 10 minutes uh we will talk about uh something that will come up on screen now now okay um for 10 minutes during this year I’m not talking about the portfolio at all it’s about 10 years yeah 10 years

I’m talking about the portfolio not not this year this year is about a band badges but I kept for you uh at the end of my presentation two readings about the portfolio so you have something left for when you’re taking the train tonight to read on the train about the portfolio

Today I would like to talk about open Badges and the badges and experience I I I I I had in in my school uh it’s not very fancy when I saw everything what was done or in doing uh yesterday is fantastic projects and it’s just do

Project I will present to you but it’s a return on uh in experience so I’m uh Dominque anaj coming from Switzerland and England and um I’m teacher sorry I’m a teacher but also a researcher in e-learning E portfolio and band badges hello uh I will talk about the context

Uh and talk about the problem uh I was facing in my school and uh talk about the solution um we try to put uh in place to overcome the problem and I will give you some uh result uh uh we we got with uh what we put uh uh in production and talk

About what we would like to develop in the future so that is uh my school on uh the edge of L lemon near Geneva between Geneva and Loan nice School old school uh 1,600 uh students 128 teachers uh it’s a l level so we call that gymnasium but we

Don’t do any physical training uh just an intellectual training so Lis uh we have different uh um strand Bala we call that maturity uh culture General is a diploma and also we have a commercial school um in our school so three different strands uh in which we are

Teaching uh it butic informatic in the first year in War uh inv matur Balor and uh in the three years uh in two other strands not much h p is a period so it’s 45 minutes per P so not much and per week not much uh and the problem we we

Have is uh that we have a uh many objectives to to um many uh competencies to work with students during a a short period of time still for example in E de mat we have to teach them how to manage their digital Identity or to use different tools such as a spreadsheet where

Uh um uh for example word or or lib office and a presentation program to teach them how to use uh the internet to find things and to uh give a sense of what they are finding uh we have to teach them how to program a little robots so introduce

Them to algorithmic so many things to do on show one of time and uh just in one uh year one and the aim of that is during that training they will have to produce uh a big document at the end of the teaching in year three is mat and we

Hope they know how to use all these tools to produce that in a very good way and we fail so the problem is uh there’s no interest in them they don’t care much about the what we are teaching and uh also there’s no marks there’s no assessment there

Nothing just we try them uh to be motivated to come to the courses and learn what we we we have to teach them they don’t come they don’t come because most of the time the lesson are at the end of the day and uh also uh we have a problem with uh uh

What they they learn because they don’t work outside the courses they don’t want during the courses on Facebook on uh on other things but not necessarily on the task we ask them to do and also the people teaching them is people just were forced to teach them this lesson because their

Timetable was not full so they have to complete the timetable we with that so you see we have all the all the ingredient for uh a failing cooking recipe and uh also uh um we have a problem to uh to to sell what we are

Doing uh to the uh to the external uh institution to the professional institutions very difficult to do that but on the other hand when we talk with uh uh further education institutions say ah we need the students having a good common in digital literation and you’re you’re failing giving them

What we need uh them to have so what can we do uh first when we discussed with uh with my colleagues my my fellow teachers they said there’s no problem because they are all digital natives so they they they don’t learn what we’re teaching them because they know

Everything already so there’s no way of of uh asking them to to to to sit for our courses they are digital natives as Mark brinsky uh said in 2001 in his famous article but we know that um they these people don’t exist so Gregor Kennedy in

Uh in Australia wrote a paper of first year students experience with technology all they really or uh really digital native and answer no they are not digital native so we did the same inquiry in our school during three three years we interview the students and uh

We ask them about the uh it skills and they they say they’re very confident they are professional in searching finding working with tools they’re very confident the uh the level of confidency is at 80% and more but when we ask them to do task related to it we see that absolutely the

Opposite so during three years we did this test at the beginning of year one the end of year one and the year of year three but also we tested the teachers okay so I don’t give you the result about the teachers so solution uh what we can

Change uh and what we can’t so we can’t change the the timetable is fixed by the the Senor management we can’t change that we can’t change that is not an academic uh subject so we can’t hire uh professional teachers in it we have to use the teachers we have with their

Skill uh we can change the fact that there’s no evaluation there no uh assessment we can change that uh the uh the recognition of what we are doing is not um is not recognized by uh uh the other body outside the school and we can’t uh teach fortnite this school

Sorry so what can we do um that’s a good question so first thing we can we can uh change the the the way we’re thinking uh the syllabus to talk about skills competencies instead of uh knowing what to do on how to do it uh we can valorize and uh promote what the

Student know and we can recognize the competencies the soft and uh the hard skill the the they already have and they they will get during uh the training in the gymnasium and also we can a bit uh Foster the use of new uh material to

Teach the new um uh new support and uh new things and also uh we’d like to let the student uh suggest uh new skill uh we could assess inside uh the institution the skill they they would like them uh propose an assess uh among their

Peer and uh for the teachers we try to change uh and uh uh and deliver to them a new um new teaching material so uh is what we did so it’s what we did I say we because we were two when I I I propose uh working on

That uh project uh they were uh uh 12 people around the table and uh one liked me very much said okay I will I will work with you because I was eating him he was not doing that with me and all the others say okay it’s very

Interesting do it and uh when it’s finished and uh it’s successful maybe we we will be interested in it so we work we work uh around a beer uh for weeks and we changed the program so now the program is written uh in competence uh uh level not in uh

Safare and uh we designed some Badges and we change uh the the periodical uh um supports and we tested that uh last year so here are the different elements uh we have used open by Factory mahara Moodle we have both some microbits uh computers uh uh built by the BBC to

Teach how to program to all the UK Stu students uh in age of 12 to 16 in the UK with you scratch and uh we have implemented daack uh which is a game developed by the radio television SS Roman in Switzerland and it’s very good game to to teach uh data protection and

Uh digital identity protecting digital identity we developed some Badges and we decided to have some level badges so we have for example G level one level two level three and uh we haven’t talked to the student about the badges at the beginning we started the courses and

When we finished one module we told them that we have badges for them and we explained that to them what badges are and what they could do with with them and what what happened the student haven’t worked uh really w w with us during all that time say oh I can get

Something so they Revis all the courses they already uh did in uh on word processing and they started to produce very good document according to the rules we have fixed and uh the courses we have given so far and they produce the document and they got the

Badge and at the beginning we just have uh completed all the the thinking around uh the two first level for the world processing badge and the student came say we want the third one what the third one is about because my colleague already has two I would like to have one

More than the the one you already have so what we have noticed at the end we have noticed that in E the Commerce and E the culture General so the the diploma level there was no significant uh Improvement in the the knowledge there was interest more interest than

Before but nothing really uh in uh in term of uh the the the the the level of skill they have acquired during uh uh the courses uh also in the uh Bala matur uh they worked very hard and during the sessions they were working they were producing new documents when

We say okay okay it’s not document is not as good as it could be to it should be to get the badge so you won’t get the badge if you don’t change document they were reworking on it fantastic and also they they tried to to get more badges than uh the than the

The kamaha the the peer the competition new motivation and this motivation was visible uh and it was motivation for the teachers for us and also for the students of course so what we like to do so we we started the experience again this year with uh four classes uh instead of one and

Um we would like to go to other concept of teaching such as uh um uh um flip classroom and uh also uh more focus on on onetoone teaching and so providing the teachers with a complete syllabus they can use and give to the students so students are more independent in their learning so

The teachers can be more um at the disposition uh uh for for the students to help them and to push them to go further we like to go further with the endorsement why uh because we like to um to improve to empower the students outside our school in the real

Life and uh we see endorsement as a a a key element for for doing that the problem at the moment they haven’t got the the idea that uh having a backpack it could be useful this they keep the badges in Moodle they don’t put that in the backpack we like

To push them to to to to do that because we like to Foster endorsement we would like to ask our colleagues in uh biology course in uh in physics in history uh courses when the student is producing a document or producing something that prove he has a skill we have worked on

During our courses to endorse that so he will he will tell the student he still has that competence and he will tell the others that it’s not comp competent that is uh in Silo but is useful across the wall um curriculum and also to do that with the

People outside the the gymnasium to do that with people where they go going for stage for uh training uh in real life exercises and also to use the badges to recognize the skill among uh each other so among the peers so when somebody has is in trouble in doing

Something looking in the backpack to find someone else having the skill that can help them uh help him so that’s what we are putting in place uh now on the next uh next year and uh asking uh creating many questions about if we’re doing the right thing or

We just uh uh putting a Bluster on the on the problem and we are not addressing really the problem with the right solution but uh we would like the other colleagues to come on board and uh to generalize uh the project to see how the project can evolve through time and to

Finish to thank you for the intention and I’m happy to answer any question in French German Swiss German Italian or English and if you want to read something about the portfolio I leave you with two documents uh I uh participates uh this year so a new book

In French about the pfolio and and U uh evaluation and my say this about e portfolio and why students are quitting e portfolio platform when they leave uh the University thank you very much yeah yeah okay thanks um so I’m really interested in endorsement and the uh recognition value of the badges because

Basically you’ve come from an intrinsic point of view and you’re making a sort of a I won’t say extrinsic but the idea of you know how could we make it portable so in what ways could these badges open doors for the students to New Opportunities and perhaps in terms

Of admissions offices or uh employment even part-time employment knock knock knock on the EV doors uh I don’t know I don’t know uh when when I’m discussing with uh people in government uh because of different things I’m doing in the account on V and responsibility I have when I talk about

New technology or new way of seeing evaluation and recognition uh I I’m talking in the middle age of uh I think we are still in middle age in Switzerland for many things so the admissions is still just the marks they’re not looking for other at the

Moment no we we I try to hack the system from the bases and uh it’s it’s it’s the bottom up ID so uh I can we can tell that uh tell about this in one or two years time not now I don’t know I hope like in Star

Wars hi Dominique thanks for that presentation I’m very interested about how you project um how you will integrate backpack in your um actual and present uh organization you you talk about Mara open B Factory now uh how you will make your student ask for beig I guess with Mara production um I’m

Interested how what will be the proof element of proof and how you will integrate the backpack with your actual organization Maha m Um the badges are in mood also they they they stay here at the moment what would like um we would like to use open badge Factory it’s a question of uh of money because of course my Headmaster is very happy I’m doing something interesting but uh until it doesn’t cost

Anything so uh that would be the problem we have Moodle because I’m managing Moodle but if anybody has to pay for managing Moodle we won’t have any Moodle in the institution we will use open uh um uh open badge passport and uh in other courses they’re using mahara to document their learning

And uh if badges is also Associated to to that learning certainly they will be pushed with a portfolio uh in mahara um I’m not sure what what I’m sure is we will use open badge uh um the the the backpack of passport to build a CV a curriculum V with all their

Competencies and now what I’ve seen with the pdf version of just uh just uh switching light on in my brain and maybe they have something to do with that okay I have a question because I think Philip is U busy uh yeah um so are you are you using

Pic um no you’re not would you be interest something we use in a country okay but uh because we’re thinking of using badges pix is a French uh testing system basically that gives you scores on it skills and we’re thinking of using badges to tell the story and not just

Use the score so in case you’re interested one day we could do that we were using ecdl okay the European driving license for computer okay but but my true question was have you managed to discriminate if the motivation comes from the badges or or from the fact that now they are very

Clear and transparent objectives or criteria that that makes it easier for students to see where they’re supposed to go the kind of things that are expected from them and maybe it’s less of a an obstacle because it’s you know in several Badges and and it and it’s

Not so much motivation as you know clarification of the we have a research framework we have gathered the data but we’re digging in so we don’t have any any comments at the moment to make about this next year okay thank you thank you Dominique big Applause and

Know have a nice coffee and stretch your legs and it’s coffee time
