I’ve just replaced the Freehub that came on my Boardman gravel bike due to the old bearings and Freehub getting rusty (presumably due to water getting in while cleaning)
The old Freehub had a rubber seal which I think sat in the outer face of the Freehub, but the new one didn’t have anything, and the guy in the bike shop said he didn’t think you needed one. I’ve tried reusing the old one, but as soon as you tighten the cone it just pulls the seal out of alignment.
The brake side, and both sides of the front have a rubber face to keep water out, so it seems weird that this wouldn’t, especially as that’s the side that needs the most cleaning.
So, should there be some sort of rubber seal (and should it have come with the Freehub), or do I just fill it up with grease and put the aluminium cover on over the cone?
