    I feel like taking out the bleed port all the way out is just extra work and extra messy.

    I actually took the training module on bleeding for bleeding Shimano brakes from Shimano’s technical site. The way they recommend is to do it the similar to how this mechanic does it. Except instead of pulling out the bleed bolt, you attach a clear tube and have a bottle or plastic bag to catch the old oil. Shimano mineral oil turns black after handful of hard braking rides when the brakes get really hot. Then you open up the bleed port and pump the brakes until the old oil has been flushed out. It’s gonna be cleaner and less messy than this method.

    It’s called a gravity bleed and it’s how you bleed everything else in the world except a few MTB brakes like SRAM and Magura.
