Currently repairing my sons bike (GT slammer)
As you can see from the photo, the bearing inside the bottom bracket has ceased to be alive.
We are new to this game and although I have the tools and ability to perform the repair, I have no idea what parts I should be purchasing. From browsing online I’ve gathered there’s a few different styles of bottom bracket, but not many that would suit this bike.
Any advice would be much appreciated. E.g are all brackets in this style a universal size, what brands are good quality or which we should avoid. Any potential upgrades.

Looks like an unsealed American bottom bracket. You can get a whole new one for like $10 probably. If he has three piece cranks though I’d recommend upgrading him to a sealed American bottom bracket (it’ll look a little different) and you can get a cheap one for $25. You’ll have the bang the bearing cups out of the bottom bracket shell though.
