Follow up question. Is there anything special about this chain if I had to break it and put it back together? Or if I had to replace it can I just use any 7 speed chain (even though the bike has 6)?

That style of chain checker is generally inaccurate and imprecise. I would measure the length of 12 full links with a steel ruler rather than use that.
And yes you can use any 5/6/7 speed chain.
The chain checker may just not have been straight when you took one of your measurements. As for the new chain, 8 speed will work fine.
