People living, working, and commuting Eastleigh can now enjoy better walking and cycling facilities in the town centre.
The aim has been to create a greener and safer route for walkers and cyclists, linking to key public hubs including Eastleigh and Southampton Airport Parkway railway stations.
The 1.2-mile connection links existing cycle and pedestrian routes including Southampton City Council’s Cycle Network “SCN” route 7, making it easier to cycle to and from Southampton city centre.
The £1.5 million scheme has delivered by Hampshire County Council and funded from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
The upgrades include a new crossing outside Eastleigh railway station which enables people on bike and foot to cross the road more safely with dedicated signal buttons. Other improvements include new cycle lane sections between Leigh Road and Arnold Road and changes to the road layout along Desborough Road where the priority has been changed to allow cyclists to travel along Desborough Road without having to give way to cars, and traffic speed reduction measures on Chestnut Avenue.

We’re here at eastley station because today we’re formally opening the eastly Town Center Cycle Improvement scheme that’s a scheme that runs all the way through from eastley Town Center to link up with the cycle Pils into Southampton uh so this scheme is part of something called the transforming cities
Initiative which is to encourage people to cycle and walk more and to connect the two places without having to use your car biggest works here was at um Chestnut Avenue um where we built a new Tuan Crossing this involved a 6 M wide Crossing where pedestrians and cyclists
Can cross at the same time it’s a through route all the way down into Southampton yeah I think it’s a great Edition for East leag cuz obviously it’s quite busy Place sometimes and um cycling ain’t always the safest I’ll be using it every time going into college
Which be quite enjoyable quite more safe for us now it be really good
