Bike commuter and traffic engineer here. I’m working on getting as many protected bike paths as I can around my city. It’s really hard to push against car culture, but some of us are working on it and doing it.

Car drivers: I don’t want to scratch my car when I drive wrecklessly
Cyclists: I don’t want to die when YOU drive wrecklessly
city planners: well the car drivers have a point there

There’s not one single street corner without one of those bent plastic things in my city, people don’t know how to drive and cyclists are just another casualty to car centric planning

Many years ago I helped a family by re-installing the short safety flag on their son’s bike. He originally had it pointed in-line with the bike.
I re-installed it to point outward and explained that drivers will avoid it because they would not want their paint scratched.
I live in a famously “bike friendly” city and it takes so much effort just to get soft hit posts erected anywhere, let alone actual barriers that could stop a car.
