These sculptures sparked a diplomatic crisis.

Parthenon, not pantheon 🤦♂️
Sorry!
The good old British Empire we stole everything 😂👌
I mean… it would be a nice gesture to return them. But they don't have to. Like you said, it's theirs. Fair and square. There's no problem here.
Greece should steal them back
"They got permission (and paid) for them by the people who owned them. Stole."
Regardless, it's not that crazy to come to some sort of deal and return them. They're more culturally significant to the Greeks than they are to the British, and the Brits have gotten their money's worth out of them…
As a Greek-Australian growing up around politics… I can confirm that this is a real issue. I love the Brits a lot… but 95% of things in The British Museum are stolen. Went there in September and all I could think about was how most of it needs to be returned lol, mostly Egypt and Greece.
British museums are full of stolen wealth.. they'll be empty if they return them back.
They got permission from the Ottoman owners at the time.
And returning shit you rightfully too by conquest is stupid. Defeat has a price. Want them? Come and take them back. Or? Be a power that can compel their return. You aren't? Oh, your country is weak and your economy partially reliant on trade with us? Then you can enjoy your stuff from this side of the world.
Britain is having trouble realizing that it is no longer " great".
You said they were taken with permission.
So how are they stolen?
If every country takes back their stuff, UK is gonna be left with nothing.
And an Indian is angry why UK is being called a thief when the UK stole so much from India
prolly take it up with the turks since they gave it away
Bro its funny but its not.
Happy to return them when Greece offers the money paid to the ottomans for them. I think it’s despicable that countries ask for items back that we saved from being destroyed during our time there only because we found them interesting. Not only that these countries never pursue the rest of the items owed within private collections only public – which is not fair.
mind you, these items were a long dead persons property and/or a long gone society not a singular modern ethnic group lmao
Britian acting like I wont intervene
Briitsh PM ? Really?
Britan didnt steal them
Greece: “This is where’d I’d keep sculptures of my history…
If I had them!”
The British didn't steal them, they got permission from the at the time owner. Modern Greece didn't even exist yet.
Missed the best bit: the British PM is at odds with the British Museums view which is at least negotiating a “long term lease” deal to send them to Greece. Oh and the chair of the museum? George Osbourne, former Chancellor under the current FOREIGN SECRETARIAT David Cameron’s government!
The whole think is an absolute mess!
I was on board with hating the British museum for "stealing" things from all over the world but after seeing some of the most historic sites in history get demolished in the Middle East I understand the important roll the museum plays in protecting precious objects.
Greece can’t even preserve their own ruins.
😑😑😑 this is how I feel when people justify, defend and do mental gymnastics to claim how it belongs to them now
🇬🇧my statues now Greek beta
The moment they give it back all other countries will try for their stuff back which they should (Africa, India, etc) 😅 Britain give stuff back lol
Most of wealth Britain got, are snatching from Africa, Arab regions and India and some of modern European region. Yeah! That’s how Britain is so rich today.
And the monarch who snatch all these wealth are still so cherished in Britain. 😅
They can’t give them back to Greece, because that would then set a Legal Precedent for every other Country, once Ruled by the British Empire, to start (if they haven’t already) Reclaiming everything. Which means the English view it as their History, not the other way around—which to me, is just hilarious irony.
I was actually talking with a British guy about going to British museum and is nothing British there 😂😂😂
People trying to argue that they were purchased have no respect over the ancient heritage. Nobody owns ancient art so nobody can purchase it. Parts of humanitys heritage are priceless, and in my opinion they should stay and anhance the beauty of the place they were created
While we are that. Return the stuff stolen from India
How about Koh I nur diamond… how about the treasures stolen from India and Egypt….
finders keepers, everyone forgetting this rule?
bro whole world in uk
Game is Game
another reason the british prime minister cancelled the meeting was because the prime minister of greece arranged a meeting with the opposing parties leader before the actual prime minister. along with saying the stuff about the marbles, he also disrespected the prime minister in the media and this move to meet with the opposition before is highly disrespectful in british politics
I’m Canadian… and those clearly of UK THEFT.
Lol
Give them back King.
As soon as I heard statues, I knew it was the British Museum
Not so fun fact: the British told the Greeks they didn’t have a good enough museum to house the statues so the Greeks built a state-of-the-art museum and the British still said no. Beating around the bush at this point.
