Hey Guys,
i need your help. I’m looking for new tyres for the 85´ Peugeot Aubisque.
The Wheels are from Rigida and at the moment there are mounted 700X20C Hutchinson Excels thyres on it, but I’m looking for new Ones.
I am not sure if i should take 23´ or 25´? Wich one should ride and fit better on the Wheels? There should be enough Space.
Maybe you guys have some recommendations for new tyres and the size? 🙂

I would strongly advise going wider. At the crown you have tons of space, the tight point is probably going to be the chainstays.
For me, the minimum size tire I ride on the road is 28mm, and I prefer wider. With good quality tires, there is no reduction in speed, and a massive increase in ride comfort and traction. Not to mention a decrease in flat tires, because wider tires can be run at lower pressure.
So, I’ll give you the same recommendations I give everyone for vintage bikes. If you want a very good tire but don’t want to spend a lot, get Panaracer Paselas. Best bang for the buck. If you want an upgrade for a little bit more money, look at the Panaracer Gravelking. And if you want to go for a high end tire and don’t mind spending, look at Challenge and Rene Herse.
Fuck, put 28s in there if they fit. 25s are ideal for very nicely paved roads, 23s for riding on a sheet of glass, and anything narrower makes a nice pizza cutter.
I’m in the same boat. Let us know which way you go. I’m leaning towards a 26 Rene Herse. Stupidly I eBay’d a set of NOS vintage 20’s when I didn’t know any better. They split. Wasted money for what I thought was going to be a nostalgic ride.
I have the exact same bike! Yours is in way better condition tho. Mine also had stupid thin tires on it that I recently swapped after getting 3 flats. But I also abuse mine and use it as a commuter. Love it tho
I may be in the minority but I ride serfas inertia tires and love them. They come in 28s and look really classic on old bikes. Would recommend
What we don’t know is how wide the inside of the rim is. I cannot make a recommendation without that, I can assume that you could put on a 25, a 28 may or may not be too wide for the rim, so I would play it safe and recommend a 25.
If you want to measure the inside dimensions of the rim here is what you will find out, a 19mm rim will fit up to a 28c tire, but a 17mm rim will not accept anything larger than a 25.
Wider tire is better to a certain limit as far as rolling resistance and comfort goes, a 25 is the perfect width for normal roads, but a 27 or a 28 is ideal for rough roads.
Have a look at the Vittoria Corsa tires! They look awesome and ride super nice! I run only 23 tires, i don’t feel like theyr too harsh for daily driving. And the look “right”, imo.
