John Oliver discusses chocolate, cocoa farming, and, of course, some facts that will make Halloween a little weird.

  1. I lived in Cote d'Ivoire. What he didn't mention is the number of children who are maimed in the industry. They alluded to it when they mentioned the fact that they were not wearing protective clothing.
On a different note, whenever the competition is limited, you are not going to get higher prices. He mentioned the economic situation in CI, but he mentioned that CI was one of the wealthiest countries in WA until the cocoa prices fell in the 1980s. The only real solution is for new companies to go in and offer higher prices. If successful, the "big boys" will follow suit. Another more productive solution, and is more suitable, is to develop other industries in CI. The increase in wages will be an incentive to migrate off the farm. Less labor means higher wages. Moreover, the producers will be becoming larger landowners. easier said than done. :/

  2. I've seen a documentary retracing the path of alpaca wood from the Andes farmers all the way to a London shop where a shawl costs more than the family in the Andes makes in 20 years…

  3. Actually Mexico is the birthplace of chocolate. They used it as money along with the base 20 math system and human sacrifice before Spain came along and stole jewels off their walls and intermixed..

  4. I still dont understand how this issue is discussed without involvement of the farming countries govermnents. They set the export rules and if coca is their most valuable resource they should not give it to US for pennies. WTF? Paying somebody more out of your own initiative is not solving the problem.

  5. I wonder if john knows a pedophile group has his face on their insta making it look like he supports pedophilia because i know if that was me, I'd be absolutely livid!!!

  6. Around the world the concept of a minimum wage needing to be the cost of living just keeps rearing its head over and over again. We all know companies always take the "if I could pay you less, I would."

The whole "we don't set the price, the market does" is just hilariously wrong. YOU ARE THE BUYER. You can pay more than the asking price ANY time you want to. You just don't want to. Which is why somebody should force you.

  7. The baby is only moving that way because he's imitating his mom off camera. You can tell she's encouraging it for the video. It's still cute but it's not a genuine reaction.

  8. If people want to take the power back we have to always research the companies we are spending our money on! Boycotting companies that are corrupt or simply reinforcing values that don’t align with human rights, is a must

  9. Im buying Tony choclonely for my sister. She's a hugger chocolate lover. I bought her like 60 bucks worth of Theo chocolate last year but im going with Tony from now on

  10. A "commitment" from a corporate company to stop using slave labor to make their products is about as useful as tits on a bull. And sadly, our own government is complicit in the use of child labor for not enforcing this policy. Shame on them.

  11. I like watching John Oliver. His videos are equally insightful and funny, but it makes you realize everything in this world is tainted. You can't escape it. From the clothes on your back to the food you eat – even the basics of life – are funded by poor people half the world over who no one gives an F about. I can't even enjoy a 75¢ chocolate bar now without feeling a little guilty.
