Robert Peston lays out how he would fix Britain.

His first step? Reduce the number of MPs by 2/3 and raise their wages to £250,000 per year.

  1. what we need is either a restricition on who can vote, or a restricion on how extensively media can lie to the electorate;

    having fewer and better paid MPs is only of value if the voters do not elect complete morons; and the world as everyone perceives it is mainly determined by the media (e.g., the most Brexity areas of Britain are the ones with the fewest immigrants; these voters did not vote for Brexit because foreigners took their jobs; they voted Brexit because the media told them that they have no jobs because of foreigners); people largely vote along the worldview which the media project;

    also, if you look at the Tory party membership who determine the Tory party leader, these are the most reactionary and deluded bunch of people you can get as a single grouping in the UK; they are only 0.001% of the electorate and only represent around (I am guessing) 10% of the views in this country; as long as they can determine (to a large extent) who leads the country, it does not matter how much you pay MPs or how few of them you have

  2. Politics is just a reflection on the society we live in which has become increasingly fragmented and divisive. It is losing its cohesion and coherence and there is no longer a consensus or even any attempt to achieve one

  3. Paying fewer MPs a much higher salary, with the banning of ANY non parliamentary employment, could work. ID cards could also work for the good of society, providing the data collected, and the control bestowed by such a culture, was not abused. There would need to be stringent safeguards.

  4. This bloke, and his ilk hate the British people. We're serfs, to be told what to do be fascists. No thanks. Another referendum on Brexit would lead to civil disorder. His sort doesn't realise the anger that their arrogance engenders. Idiots.

  5. YES ,,, sacking a good few useless MP's would be a good start……….BUT THE BIGGEST BENEFIT THAT COULD REALLY HELP THE UK RIGHT NOW, WOULD BE THE SACKING OF OVER HALF, (300,000) USELESS CIVIL SERVANTS…………These eu luvvies, since BREXIT have actively worked to destabilize this country at the behest of their eu masters in brussels, (AS PART OF THE EU PUNISHMENT PLAN FOR THE UK), because they expected to REMAIN & be allowed to join the eu gravy train for 'SERVICES RENDERED'…………….
    Look back at the issues we have faced, most if not all have ended in disaster created by the eu loonies across Whitehall , YUP ! DEFINATELY TOO MANY SIR HUMPHRIES!!!!

  6. the tories have had more than enough money since 2010 to fix the economy..labour already bailed out the banks.there was a ten year period of excessive borrowing while the tax payers paid in record amounts but had services reduced..so where was the extra 1200 billion of borrowing spent from 2010 to 2019.?

  7. There is only one way to fix the UK.
    General election. Introduce PR.
    Rejoin the EU & Euro. Easy to state. It is not so easy to implement without media reform. The UK electorate needs to be taught critical thinking skills.

  8. Don’t give £240, 000 a year, give it to the NURSES. And to the very low pay works. And the Government wouldn’t give pay rises to those who went on strike a few months ago. Your just talking nonsense.

  9. We need much less power in the hands of MPs We need a written constitution that enshrines protections of basic services into law, such as the NHS utilities etc, so these cannot be at the whims of political dogma. The second chamber should be elected from the regions. Robert is also talking utter rot about pay. He's suggesting that all MPs should be paid ultra-top salaries. It's a total nonsense

  10. Many MPS are millionaires or highly qualified lawyers. Increasing the salary is not going to make a difference. We need MPs from different backgrounds. Not the PPE Oxbridge clique that is currently in power. Changing the system to stop the abuses of power, bullying, increasing transparency, changing the selection process for select committees, the MP selection criteria, stoping the use of special advisors which takes power from elected officials, overhauling the expenses system would all help.

  11. Yes again, and not i. 2036 2030 at tge lateat! There's no 'not again', it is still going on, it has never gone away, the anger has intensified. There's no putting this BS under the carpet, there is no carpet big enough!

  12. Goddammut The Times, STOP being so scared of your switchboard lighting up from your mad sap Brexiteer voters. They are not in the majority, and they should start preparing for some serious reckoning. Let them call and blabber, we're going to rejoin the EU and that's the end if it.

  13. No surprise that he is hopefully optimistic – that's true for the great majority of humans. Scientific fact – we are predisposed to optimistic outlook. I'm not blessed/ cursed with that trait….so see a bit clearer in my predictions. The last time my 'skill' failed me was in belief – way back in early 90s – was that the internet would be a liberation that would set the people free to see truth. That worked out well. 😞…..So – – I'm not hopeful.

  14. The thing about Peston is he starts making a point, you go off and make a cup of tea, put the washing out, hoover the entire house and you come back to find he isn't halfway through his answer.

  15. We were IN the EU for forty plus years and people voted to come out. Clearly some things about being in the “common market” didn’t satisfy the majority of the people. It isn’t all about growth, productivity and the economy.

  16. Peston and other whining remainers could start a Rejoin Party tomorrow. ? If Brexit is so unpopular they should win hundreds of seats at next election ?
    But they don't do it…? I wonder why no ? Maybe because they know that Majority of
    voters have moved on ? .Or maybe they read about the Housing and Cost of Living
    Crises in Ireland and Holland ( EU members of course ! ) or that Germany is moving
    into economic recession ?? Must be Brexit I suppose….. ?
