went for a ride today and somehow cracked my rear cassette.
I’ve never seen this happen before, and am wondering what may have caused it, my guess is either I got a rock caught in it, or that I shifted under load and it pulled the cog over.
the shop said that it was because I was mixing a shimano cassette and a sram deralliur, but I don’t see why that would have anything to do with it.

Looks like a manufacturing issue.
SRAM and shimano should be interchangeable.

Shifting under load makes sense. Anecdotally, I’ve seen more 12 speed cassettes crack or bend, but usually the big aluminum cogs.

Whoever said that mixing brands caused that is an idiot. Probably caused by a combination of things including a defect in the metal. Wouldn’t sweat it.

I’ve broken many cassettes, it happens. I usually break mine because I ride my bike like a single speed and those cassettes aren’t made for that kind of force

This might be a shifting ramp machined into the large cog. (I can’t see it well enough in your pix to be sure. If there’s actually a crack in the metal, ignore me.)
When you shift into the big cog, your derailleur nudges the chain and a link catches on the ramp, which carries the chain up to the cog. Cassettes aren’t just a bunch of gears bolted together, they’re marvels of machine-shop wizardry with all sorts of up- and down- ramps.

What brand of cassette? Doesnt look very old if less than 12 months old ask for warranty.
