WEST LINDSEY PARISH #119: NORTH WILLINGHAM

Ah welcome to North Willingham folks, one of those places you’re bound to know if you’re a bike nut. It’s located just to the East of Market Rasen on the A631, the road to Louth. The village was listed in the Domesday Book as “Wunlingeha”. North Willingham’s history goes back centuries but its most notable historical figure arguably lived in the early 1800s.

To the West of the village there once stood Willingham House, built in 1790, which is where the Boucharett family once lived. They were major landowners in North Willingham and had been since the 16th century. Amongst their number was Emilia Boucharett, better known as Jessie. Emilia became famous thanks to her campaign for women’s rights, including securing the right to vote. Her work still lives on today thanks to a charity founded by her and two other women. The Boucharetts were responsible for the building of North Willingham’s church, and its school, both of which still stand but only the church is still in use.

Willingham House no longer stands as it was demolished in the 1970s but you can still see part of its grounds. That’s thanks to Willingham Woods, a vast area of woodland that stretches across the border with Market Rasen. Every Wednesday night in the summer, hundreds of two wheeled machines descend on its Kiosk, which has earned it the nickname – The Bikers Café.

Get your leathers on then, lets go!
