I noticed something weird on my 2022 Canyon Ultimate CFR, see the attached pictures. I’m not sure if this is a crack or a cosmetic issue. My bike wasn’t used for 3 weeks due to medical reasons and this appeared on the top tube while nobody touched the bike.

I asked 3 local shops in email, showed them these same pictures and they all said it’s a crack and quoted me some exorbitant prices to fix it. Obviously their interest is to sell the expensive repair service, even if it’s not cracked.

So my questions are:
1. how can I check myself if this is really a crack?
2. if a crack, how could it occur while the bike was idle, standing in a Canyon stand?
3. is there some extended warranty for the frame? (I purchased the bike in 2022 February)

  1. It appears that you may be looking for information about possibly damaged carbon. If this is the case please contact Canyon support directly to assess the situation.

Your mistrust is misplaced, those shops are 100% right, it’s definitely a crack. The damage is so obvious I would say it looks like something fell on it, or the bike fell over. Factory defects tend to look like they are under the clearcoat and don’t have chips of clear and carbon sticking out of them. Per automoderator, contact Canyon first.

    This is gnarly:

  3. That does look like a crack. Is it smooth or jagged? Maybe it fell, someone hit it accidentally, etc

Where exactly is it? Looks similar to ones I’ve seen caused by a handlebar swinging into the top tube.

  5. still baffles me why people who bying CFR frames, they’re fragile and brittle, so many crack issues reported with them here. This one is 100% crack

  6. That is a cracked top tube, and no there is no way it spontaneously imploded. Do you use a repair stand or bike rack and clamp the top tube? What are those marks in front of the crack?

Either you clamped the top tube, bike fell, something fell on it or something else. But it did not happen spontaneously.

  7. Yeah, sorry dude. That totally looks like a crack. Canyon might give you a deal on a replacement frame if you contact them. Or you could take it to the carbon repair shop for a quote.
