I bought this cheap, crappy 26er not to long ago when I was completely unknowledgeable when it comes to biking/cycling. And, it sucked… So I decided upgrade it
I turned the bike to be more of a hybrid(road bike X MTB, for street fast), spec’d out the whole thing by the time I was finished.
I initially wanted a 46t, but obviously it wouldn’t fit on a 1x set up. So I just settled with a 40t instead. With a 40t by 11t cog, the performance is good, I’m able to hit 32-35mph on a short distance sprint pretty consistently.
But I’m certain if I just add a couple more teeth to my 1x set up I would be even faster and efficient.

You literally have no gap in the current chainring position , so the only way to go bigger is to mount the chainring on the outer side of the cranks spider, however that will mess up the chain line which is not optimal. But if you are riding in small rear cogs already, then it may be ok. You can mount your current chainring on the outside to test it first
Keep the chainring and put a smaller block on the back.
According to this [speed calculator](https://cyclingroad.com/bicycle-gear-ratio-cadence-and-speed-calculator/), at 85 rpm you’ll go 25.92 MPH with a 42 X 11 and 24.47 mph with a 40 X 11. I don’t think 1.45 mph is worth jacking with it — if you pedal at 90 rpm you’ll make up the difference, and that might even be a more efficient tempo. Spin it to win it!
