Part 47. Another episode working on the 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit aka ‘The Aylesbury Duck’ aka ‘The Beast’ aka ‘The Clown Car’ where one job often leads to 3 more.

My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn’t expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 47 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this ‘Trying to FIX’ series. Many thanks, Vince.

  1. Correct torque values are on the next page of the manual: 109 – 115 Nm for the "Bolt – Caliper to stub axle 1/2 UNF" POS 35 as shown on page 82 of the pdf (posted again without url)

  2. I think shopping on others cars is still a BIG thing lol god knows I’ve been tempted..but honestly never have..I just get burned at a junk yard because I’m faily honest

  3. After watching this series, I can understand why Rolls Royce cars are so expensive brand new. The quality is amazing. You are doing a fantastic job bringing this lady back to glory. Keep up the amazing work. Best wishes from the USA!

  4. Just leaving a comment to say how much I love watching you work on this car – the journey you’re taking us on is inspiring! Thank you Vince!

  5. Rule No. 1 – DON'T EVER ASK CAR QUESTIONS ON A FORUM!!!! Forums are where numb skulls go to talk etihs about absolutely everything. You will NEVER get an intelligible answer on a public forum.

  6. Vince you can get butyl gasket in different cross-sections to seal the headlamp units.
Stop bodging either do it correctly or give the part to someone who knows what they are doing.
How many hours are you into this project now and what would be the Labour costs?

  7. Hi Vince , cant comment on the Bowers and Wilkins zeppelin fix video for some reason ? Anyway my comment was to fix the mesh tears get some fine invisible thread from sewing store and carefully pull the edges together not too tightly though. Great vid though . I have the Bose soundlink mini II that is incredible for its size.

  8. I know it's to late, but that tape is REALY strong.
I did put it on the backside of my reg.plate on my MC..
When I sold my bike I had to replace the holder+reg plate.
Still have the old one.. They will never ever come apart 😜

  9. Found this series about 4 days ago, I’m now caught up. Awaiting next update. Great job doing DIY fixes, I’d do somethings different but some of your fixes are brilliant. I’m now waiting for the MOT with anxiety.

  10. Coming along nicely, not watched for a while, but i noticed you starting the engine, very briefly, just to move the car around, not good for an engine to keep doing that regulary, need to give it a long run to get everything really hot & the oil up to normal running temperature, to drive out any moisture from within the systems & exhaust etc.

  11. Another great episode, really enjoyed that. Your 5l isn't going to get very far, it's a 108l tank! Assuming it's the same as my '96 Bentley Turbo R the warning light will be on until there's at least 16l in there.

  12. Hi Vince , rather than silicone direct to glass , do what we used to do for draught proofing metal windows. Clean the surface, apply a bead of silicone then in your case put cling film over the glass ( like covering it as if it was a bowl of soup) then lightly oil (cooking oil) the mating face of the film, dont get any wrinkles. Then put the 2 together but dont clip tight use clamps so only squeezing the silicone but not fully. Wait till set fully then separate the two, remove the cling film, and clean away any oil, trim off excess silicone the put together and fully clip. This will now compress the silicone seal. Tip : dont use too much silicone or you wont get the clips on.

  13. Late to the game but really enjoying watching your journey with the rolls. Just wanted to mention when using a torque wrench, it's moving force you're torquing to. Takes more force to break a stationary bolt than to turn it when already moving so if the torque wrench clicks on a stationary bolt and the bolt doesn't move that doesn't mean the bolt had been torqued to that spec, could still be under. Same reason double clicking is pointless 🙂
